Subsidies and Trade Policy Stir U.S. and Canada Ships
The piece argues subsidies for mail steamship routes are vital to national commerce. It cites Canada paying subsidies to establish Pacific and Atlantic routes, reducing China to Atlantic transfers via Vancouver. It warns Americans to rally for protective policies, noting U.S. manufacturing growth and James Kitson’s warning against hasty wage or price changes.

Keater House saloon disturbance ends with arrest and missing youth
At the Keater House saloon two ladies and Officer Afowry confronted five or six youths at billiards. Fred Gustafson, under 18 and a Dispatch employee, was escorted out. Mrs Gustafson and Mrs Metzgar sought him while a warrant was issued for his absence. Thomas S. Robinson of the saloon appeared in court with a May 14 continuation. The case invokes liquor ordinance section 4 on billiards and games and the grand jury later indicted several for burglary and forgery with a plan for a separate juvenile jail wing.
