Key West May 5 Special It is conceded here that the torpedo boat Ericsson built at Dubuque Iowa has been lost at sea. The craft traveled from the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico and the ocean. It has endured repeated accidents since launch. Displacement 120 tons, three guns in main battery, 1400 horsepower and a steel hull.
A May 5 special dispatch says a party carrying a commission from President McKinley to Gen. Gomez landed in Santo Domingo province and fought Spanish forces. The gunboat Wilmington patrolling east of Havana opened fire, delivering about sixty wounds as Spaniards were driven back.
Washington May 5 Special. After talks with the president Senate Burrows of Michigan said progress is moving smoothly and that Porto Rico should be taken “tomorrow,” or in a day or two. He avoided detailing the interview but indicated seizure was anticipated soon.
A Philadelphia dispatch reports the Tyranitary sighting five warships fifty miles northeast of George's Shoals in Newfoundland. The group allegedly includes a battleship a cruiser and three torpedo-boat like vessels. The Tyranian captain said the fleet steamed westward at reduced speed prompting navy interest.
Messages were sent to cruiser commanders patrolling New England waters to watch for the Spanish vessels. The dispatch indicates active pursuit and heightened alert in maritime patrol operations.
