Canal Fight Leads To Assault Clearings In Court
In police court Magistrate Kerns dismissed Cornelius Couwenberg’s assault case after weak testimony. Four Belgians—Fin De Pauw Charles De Pape John Van Bauchet and Ben Van Daele—were arrested for assault following a Sunday canal altercation in which Edward Van Derhagen used a shotgun. The four cases were heard. De Pauw was struck with a gun barrel and two visitors wrestled for the weapon. Couwenberg’s case was left unresolved. Charlie Stone was fined for assaulting August Stavis, the bite and chew noted as self defense as Stavis pressed fingers into Stone’s mouth.
