Crushed by a Train on Davenport Bridge
An accident on the Davenport rail bridge near Front Street left brakeman Erastus Sparrowgrove likely to lose both legs and possibly his life. A broken coffling pin caused cars to run together as he dangled from a ladder and clung to a coupling pin, saving the car from derailment but suffering severe injuries. He was moved to Mercy hospital after first aid at the depot. Sparrowgrove, with a wife and three children in Brooklyn, New York, faces grim prospects.
