Development of Tri City Model Farm in Illinois Dairy Firm
Howard's Dairyman highlights the Black Hawk farm of Tri-City Milk in Rock Island County Illinois. A 1906 piece on a businessman starting a dairy farm sparked reader interest. The operation milks about 275 cows, grows 200 acres of corn for nearly 1000 tons of ensilage, and 300 tons of shredded fodder plus 8000 bushels of corn. It uses a manure spreader daily and runs four teams for manure distribution. The herd is about half Holstein and half Jerseys and Guernseys, with a four percent average milk yield. The farm markets milk at roughly 1.75 dollars per 100 pounds delivered by wagon, with a local retailer contracting for two years, reserving cream and skim milk for calves and pigs. The enterprise is profitable, aided by careful management and sanitary practices, and readers are urged to learn from the successful model.
