Old Maids in Michigan Chronicle a Courageous Frontier Tale

Two elderly women Rachel Mitchell and Samantha Wyman lived together in Kalama township Michigan. They settled near Marshall after moving from Vermont and Massachusetts, tilling a hardy farm with outdoor labor. Aunt Rachel, born May 11 1809 in Monmouth Massachusetts, became a scourge of the wilderness and bore the burden of building a homestead, while Samantha, born May 11 1811 in Vermont, aided labor as she could. They faced bears and harsh winters, and Rachel proved able to work as much as any man while Samantha managed smoother duties indoors. Their farm prospered with livestock and crops, and they remained free of debt save for a mortgage they never suffered. The piece portrays Aunt Rachel as six feet tall, strong and determined, and recalls their early days amid a forest frontier.
