A poem frames diverse laborers as heroic origins of vigor then contrasts their fates as sharks devour fish and sailors and soldiers die. It laments wasted lives and notes that cowardice and malice endure.

Fort Armstrong Built On Rock Island By Regulars In 1816

Special Correspondence recounts how 1816 fort construction at Rock Island began under Col Lawrence with logs storehouses bakehouse and a square 400 foot per side enclosure. The post became upper Mississippi headquarters for twenty years and involved chiefs Keokuk Black Hawk Scott and Taylor. It was linked to Black Hawk War events and later decay.

Black Hawk War and Rock Island Armory History

A historical account traces early Sauk and Fox land occupation east of the Mississippi, the 1828 1832 conflicts, and Gen Gaines and Gov Reynolds actions. It recounts Black Hawk led incursions, the 1832 battles Stillman’s Run and Bad Axe, the 1832 Rock Island treaty, and Rock Island as site of a future central army arsenal.
