Reports from Goliad Texas tell of a violent Sunday tornado that killed 08 people and injured 103 with extensive property loss. The storm leveled 150 stores, damaged telegraph lines, and hindered relief work as officials prepare makeshift graves and appeals for aid to storm victims.
Washington reports the House passed the naval appropriation bill after debates over a Roberts amendment to build three ships in government yards. By authority of the secretary of war the commanding officer at Fort Sheridan will send two companies of the Twentieth infantry to Muskegon Michigan to participate in the unveiling of the statue to the late President McKinley on May 30 with 500 men in each company.
New York May 20 Justice Miles Beach of the New York supreme court died Monday at his Waldorf Astoria apartment. Cause reported as diabetes with recent surgery to remove a carbuncle. Born 1840 he studied law in Troy where he later served as mayor. He served on the common pleas bench before election to the supreme court.
Isaac Sloan who was sent up for life in 1995 from Kentucky for killing a secret service agent has had his sentence reduced to ten years by President Roosevelt. With good time, Sloan will be released July 29 this year and is the last federal convict in the Indiana state prison except for one.
The jury returns a verdict of guilty in the trial of Julie Lehmann on charges tied to an opium scandal. The court fixes a penalty of four to five years in the penitentiary. Monday proceedings conclude the case.
In Montreal Gaynor and Capt Greene gain initial success in resisting extradition to the United States to face charges of defrauding the U S government. A special Canadian Pacific train carried High Constable Gale and aides with a writ to the Montreal jail where the pair were confined by Judge La Taken thee. Middlesboro Kentucky May 20 A fierce clash occurred between Sheriff Broadwater of Scott county Virginia and the Wright gang in the mountains of Hancock county Tennessee. Outlaws John Vansant and John Templeton were killed. Sheriff Broadwater declares the outlaws cannot escape.
A severe hurricane swept across Scinde in British India on May 20. Forty miles of the Scinde railroad were washed away, bridges, houses and embankments vanished. Fifty miles of telegraph wires were destroyed and many lives reported lost.
Between 175 and 225 workers, including many boys, perished in the Fraterville mine explosion near Coal Creek Tennessee. Rescue efforts found eight bodies initially and twenty six more later, with only one survivor who survived briefly before dying.
