Kingston Jamaica reports an immense earthquake disaster with thousands dead and fires burning across the city. Americans among victims, military overcrowded hospitals, aid requested as port facilities and water supply fail.
Sir Alexander Swettenham reports from Kingston that the Jamaica earthquake mostly affected three parishes Kingston Port Royal and St Andrew. Fire has ceased in Kingston the burned area spans a triangle centered near the parade gardens to the sea and Duke Street. Burials total 343 by noon with 440 people admitted to hospital, and labor shortages hinder clearing efforts.
President Roosevelt will ask Congress to enlarge the Interstate Commerce Commission powers to handle emergencies like the current car shortage. The commission has submitted an initial northwest investigations report and will urge legislation after a White House meeting with commission members and National Demurrage delegates. The plan includes reciprocal demurrage to penalize delays and proposals for car interchange to meet extraordinary demand.

Native steers and yearlings range from $2.50 to $66.25, western and Texan steer prices seen at $3.00 to $6.40 per cwt, calves $3.00 to $96.50, hogs including packing sows $6.40 to $8.00, mixed lots $5. etc. Sheep and lambs quoted at $4.00 to $7.00 per cwt with yearling wethers around $5.00 to $6.00.

The United Mine Workers convention adopted a resolution calling for a distinct department of labor and condemning Oscar Straus for allegedly allowing employers to violate the contract labor act. In separate action, Mac Andrews Forbes Co of New York and 18 Young Co of Baltimore, accused of monopolizing the Heorice paste industry, were fined $18,000 by Judge Hough.
