In Rome the pope begins the twenty-fifth year of his pontificate with Te Deum at St. Peters attended by 24 cardinals and 40 bishops. Jubilee events are set for March 3 with coronation rites. Card6inals Rampolla led the service as guards and thousands witnessed the scene.
After talks with state department officials and lawmakers, Prince Henry will visit Washington next Monday afternoon. He will travel with Ambassador von Holleben or Count Quadt and staff, arriving at four pm at the eastern main entrance and entering via the rotunda. In Owingsville Kentucky on Thursday night a keg of blasting powder exploded while John Thompson moved items into a kitchen. Three children aged eleven eight and three were killed instantly. The mother and another child were fatally injured.

A late night blaze wiped out the Fifth Avenue branch machine shop and adjacent buildings in Brooklyn. The 500 by 200 foot iron shed housed machinery and 25 elevated rail cars, with losses estimated at 200000 to 250000 dollars.
Four apartment houses on Kingston avenue Brooklyn were destroyed by fire on Thursday. The Brooklyn orphan asylum nearby was threatened as occupants escaped to the street. Fire department estimated losses at 30000 dollars. A Richmond dry goods store on Broad street owned by Cordes and Mosby burned Thursday night with losses about 190000 dollars, mostly insured.
