Administrators in Joliet Junior College territory await a Springfield ruling on high school district tuition payments. State Education advisor Page recently opined that paying Joliet Junior College tuition by a high school district would be illegal, countering a Chicago law firm view.
The Mokena Community Public Library District trustees appointed by Judge Orenic in late August organized the board selecting Rudolph Englehardt as president Louis Richards as secretary and Walter Welsch as treasurer Joseph Bernardin was chosen as representative to Burr Oaks Library System with Clarence Miller as alternate They met Joliet Public Library librarian Robert Pohl and state library consultant Peter Bury to plan early operations Welsch will attend a state trustees meeting November 18 to 20 at Allerton Park Mokena Village Library remains staffed by volunteers under the Mokena Book Club with regular Wednesday hours at Joliet Junior College Tuition decisions at Lincoln Way are unsettled with the state Junior College Board reportedly seeking an attorney general ruling The attorney general’s opinion was awaited County Supt Bucher had not been notified Students from Lincoln Way district who applied before July 1 and whose parents agreed to cover partial tuition are being accepted at Joliet without payment Others who did not apply before July 1 must now pay their tuition bills.
The Mokena Village Board orders a title search on property donated by the original developer to the village. The site has served as a park and two churches, with the Methodist church active and the Lutheran building empty and hazardous. Bids on the building may wait until the title search clarifies the village’s position, with possible library and village hall use envisioned.
Mrs. Margaret L Robertson of Mokena, a fifth grade teacher in the Frankfort system, was seriously injured Thursday when her car collided with a truck on a curve of U S 30 near U S 45. She is in the intensive care unit at Silver Cross hospital with both legs broken. The truck driver Fred Sturges of Koats Ind was cited for improper lane usage. Robertson also serves as secretary of the Mokena Woman's Club.
Mokena residents approved a 21 cent educational tax levy by 365 yes to 342 no with nine spoiled ballots. The district plans to file the levy by Sept 27 to cover operating costs. A $95,000 bond for a six-room Willowcrest School addition was also approved, with bids due after the new year and completion expected before September 1967. Enrollment rises to 609, with sizable increases across grades from first through eighth, plus special education.
