The Mokena Lions plan a sale of five numeral house numbers to align with new Chicago style street design. Lions members will visit residents this Saturday June 2 with sample numbers, offering options on redwood boards and steel rod lawn placements at prices ranging from 1 to 4 dollars for various configurations.
Mokena Community Park District announces a summer recreation program for ages six to fourteen starting June 11 with Miss Sharon Cappel in charge. Registration June 11–12 from 9 to noon. activities run weekdays 9 to noon and 9 to 4 through August 3 with sports, archery, golf, badminton, horseshoes and bean bag games. No fees.
Voters in the Lincoln Way and surrounding areas weigh a proposal to form a junior college district offering a two year program with potential tax support and bonds. Absentee ballots available. polling places set for unincorporated and incorporated areas. opposition cites tax fears and district wealth. Sixty eighth grade students from rural Joliet area schools will receive diplomas Friday night at Lincoln Way high school. John H. French will speak. Verne E. Cracker will present diplomas. Receptionists and programs include invocations by Rev. Francis J. Rausch and a freshman chorus under Pat Hartmell. Participating schools include Summit Hill Ann Rutledge Weitendorf Schmuhl Reiter Marley Union Richardn.
The choirs of St John’s Church Mokena present their third annual festival Sunday evening June 3 at 7 30. Cherub Junior Boys Junior GirlsTeen and adult choirs each perform before a combined finale totaling about 70 voices.
Lincoln-Way high school prepares for two graduation events with 147 seniors to receive diplomas on June 4 and 5 at 8 p.m. Senior Honors Night features speeches, awards, and performances led by Ronald Yunker and Carl Sherwood. the commencement follows with Kay Monsalvatge as speaker and multiple scholarship presentations.
Thirty nine graduates of Mokena grade school will receive diplomas Friday night June 1 at Carpenter Street School. Louis F. Bottino assistant superintendent and former state legislator will deliver the address The Challenge of Change. The program begins at 8 p.m. with a concert band processional and chorus performances. Mokena Amvets will hold a joint officer installation on Saturday at 8 p.m. in the home of Commander Martin Murray at 4 East Bryant Street Mokena with Justice of the Peace James R. Adams officiating. Also noted is Midshipman CPO James A Landfried of Mokena receiving the Tribune Silver Medal for ROTC achievements at IIT.
The Share in the Fare drive to fund a foreign student at Lincoln Way high and send a Lincoln Way student abroad nears its climax. The local AFS chapter reports $987.23 raised to date toward a $1,300 goal, expected by summer vacation.
Funeral services were held for Fred H. Brooks 65 from Baskerville chapel New Lenox to St. Jude church with burial at Resurrection cemetery. Brooks born Detroit served as navy medical corpsman in World War I and worked 25 years at Chicago post office then Spiegel Co before moving to Arkansas with his wife Katharine Kean Brooks. He is survived by son James of New Lenox and grandsons Rickey and Bryan.
Mrs. Selma Bechstein Nelson of 49 White Street Frankfort died May 22 at Dixmore nursing home Chicago Heights after a long illness. Funeral at Hirsch chapel Chicago Heights conducted by Rev. Erich Bizer. Burial Pleasant Hill cemetery Frankfort. Born November 29 1885 in Frankfort she lived here all her life. Survived by husband Elmer one sister Bertha Stege one brother Arthur Bechstein.
Mrs Beatrice Mann 81 of 832 S Prairie Rd New Lenox died Saturday May 26 at Silver Cross Joliet after a long illness. Born in England she came to the United States in 1907 and lived in Chicago until 1940 then moved to New Lenox. Survived by three daughters Mrs Algot N Peters and Mrs Arnold Banks and Mrs Michael Flanigan and one son Walter C all of New Lenox, nine grandchildren eight great grandchildren and three brothers Alex William Smith England and Sidney J Smith Canada. Service Tuesday at Baskerville chapel then Grace Episcopal Church with Rev Richard A Crist officiating. Interment Cedar Park Cemetery Chicago.
