Tony Bettenhausen Dies in Indianapolis Crash
Auto racer Tony Bettenhausen of Tinley Park dies at 44 after a flaming crash at the Indianapolis speedway. A sheared cotter pin caused a front axle misalignment, sending his car into the wall and a wire fence at high speed during testing for friend Paul Russo. Bettenhausen had 29 prior crashes but sought his first Indy 500 win.

Carol Sherwood a Lincoln-Way junior has been chosen by American Field Services to spend the summer in the Netherlands. She sails from Montreal June 9 arrives Rotterdam June 19 and stays with Mr and Mrs Eisse Jan Bats in Bedum. Carol is the third Lincoln-Way student selected and is among 1500 finalists nationwide.

Polls open noon to 7 p.m. at Lincoln Way grade schools. to raise 21 cents per 100 dollars, with funds used as needed. Board also approved staff hires, discussed redecorating, and reviewed bids on typewriters and an incinerator.
Mokena Post Office Dedication Draws Large Local Crowd
About 200 people attended a Saturday dedication for the Mokena post office. Dignitaries praised Postmaster Margaret O'Brien and noted the project as part of a federal building program. Local leaders, veterans, and school bands participated, with a 50 star flag raised and national anthem sung.

Lincoln Way Board Hires Two New Teachers
Lincoln Way high school board hired two teachers at the Thursday night meeting. John A. Tripp of Homewood will teach mathematics and freshman general science. Norman B. West of Franklin will teach mathematics. West is 25, a Culver-Stockton College graduate with a BS in business administration and economics, and has three years teaching plus two years business experience. His salary is 5450, he is married with two children. Tripp, 23, from Homewood, graduates from the University of Chicago in June with a math major and is not married.

At the Mokena Post Office dedication last Saturday a photographer was unavailable. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Williams of Bur Oak Lane stepped in to take pictures of their children in the Lincoln Way Band and the Mokena Grade School Band, saving the day.

Hold Rites For Laura Hansen Of Frankfort
Funeral services were held Monday May 15 at St. Peter's United Church of Christ Frankfort for Laura Hansen 71 of 212 South Hickory Street Frankfort who died Friday May 12. She was born in Green Garden township and lived on a farm 31 years before moving to Frankfort in 1921. She was a member of the church and the Women's Guild. Youth Patrick Horan Killed in Train Collision at Francis Road Crossing
A New Lenox youth, 18 year old Patrick Horan of 331 North Joliet Avenue, died instantly Tuesday afternoon when his car collided with the side of a locomotive on the Wabash Decatur Limited at the Francis Road crossing. Deputy Elmer Isaacson reported a witness traveling east at 50 mph saw Horan pass him and crash into the locomotive.
