First entrants in Mokena Lions Fourth of July Queen Contest
Gayle Bernard age 17 of 179th and Wolf Road and Marilyn Yunker age 16 of 11139 Reverie Road lead the field for the annual Fourth of July Festival queen contest. The Woman's Auxiliary of William Martin Post No. 725 VFW will sell poppies in Mokena on May 20 to aid veterans in hospitals and support the Eaton Rapids Michigan orphanage. Poppies are made by disabled veterans and sold to raise funds near Memorial Day with roots in World War I and the poem In Flanders Fields.

Mokena village board sent about 450 letters asking property owners about a storm sewer and street paving program costing roughly 1.2 million dollars funded by special assessment bonds. Village Clerk Alvin Sorensen reported 204 replies with 189 opposed and 15 for the plan.
