The report notes extensive remodeling of St. Jude’s Church and the construction of a new addition completed about six months ago. Fr. Dennis Hall OFM serves as pastor at St. Jude’s parish following the sisters moving into their new quarters roughly a year after the project began.
Central Advisory committee and Lincoln Way School Board members met at the high school to review last minute questions about the May 20 tax increase referendum. A nine page mimeo compared Lincoln Way with area high schools on salaries costs and per pupil expenses.
Ronald Chopp aged 19 and Thomas Sowa 49 of Joliet are jailed after assaulting State Trooper James Brockman of New Lenox. They were fined 430 dollars each and ordered to restitution for Rainbow drive in damage. Brockman sustained a broken wrist.
Frankfort grade school vocal department and band will present their annual spring concert Thursday evening May 18 at 7 30 in the school gym under Mrs Joan Crisman vocal instructor and Perry Friedmann director of the concert band. Public is invited.
About 100 residents attended a Monday night meeting at the gym to hear Principal LeRoy Wright and the school board discuss a five room addition to the present grade school. Wright cited state and county studies and noted transport and cost considerations while urging ahead to avoid future crowding.
New Mokena officials were installed led by Mayor Charles Swanberg who announced committees and reappointed Anthony Dina as civil defense director. Will Tuttle named marshal with police department plan to be outlined later. meetings set May 16. Kay Van Rheeden of Frankfort selected for Girls State at MacMurray College in Jacksonville Illinois June 20 to 27.
Lynn Kohlhagen of the Frankfort Lions club announced turtles for the second annual Turtle Derby are on sale. Mississippi Racing Turtles with a Southern crawl are used. The May 25 event at the Frankfort gym begins at 7 30 p m. Tickets from Lions members.
The New Lenox grade school music department presents a two night variety show in Haven school gym on May 12 and 13 at 8:00. The program features the band and mixed chorus with a full pit band and dances from the Can Can to the Charleston staged under Milton Morris and Robert Fahrner with choreography by Mrs. Mary Bossom. Russell Koerner serves as choral director and Dale Anderson is master of ceremonies.
Mokena to dedicate its new post office Saturday at 2 30 p m with history of village postal service since 1853. Postmaster Margaret M O Brien and Roy Richardson led a list of past postmasters from Warren Knapp in 1853 to Nora Groth in 1934. The program features Lincoln Way High School and Mokena Grade School bands, visits by postmasters, a benediction, remarks by Mayor Swanberg, and tours of the new building.
Joseph Grobarich and his wife celebrate 25 years of marriage as guests at a surprise dinner hosted by their son Joseph Jr and daughter in Collinsville. The couple wed May 9 1936 at SS Cyril and Methodius Joliet with Rev Sylvester Jankola officiating.
Mrs Lizzie Sievert 88 of Mokena died May 8 at her home after a lingering illness. Born Feb 26 1873 in Orland she lived in the area all her life. Survived by two daughters Sophia Danielson and Mrs Beagley and a son Arthur. Funeral May 10 at Hirsch Funeral Home Tinley Park with Rev Theodore Wimmler officiating. Burial in St Johns church cemetery.
Mokena Lions chairman Ralph Thompson announces pancake day this Saturday May 13 from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the VFW hall on Wolf road. Tickets are available through Lions or at the door with Florimond Baudry supervising as Honorary Chairman. Proceeds benefit Trinity School for Exceptional Children.
The Mokena Woman's Club will sponsor a spring luncheon and card party on Wednesday May 24 at St. Mary's Social Center on Wolf Road. The event starts at 1 PM with spring decorations, individual table prizes and a main award. Tickets are available from club members or at the door.
