The Mokena Grade School Board proposes a $54,000 bond to buy land adjoining Willowcrest School for future expansion. Voters will decide April 8 at the regular school election, with two ballots and polling at Carpenter Street School from noon to 7 pm.
An Orland Park family pledged an anonymous $15,000 gift to help fund carpeting and equipment for the new junior high school. Superintendent Norbert Jerling announced the donation at a board meeting, noting it marks a first for a public elementary school and praises the community’s support.
Bruce T. Shoop former Mokena Village Board candidate has been transferred from Stewart-Warner to John W. Hobbs Co. in Springfield. He cannot serve if elected as he no longer resides in Mokena. remaining candidates are Henry Clarke Anthony Dina and Edward Haislet, with Clarke the incumbent.
Four Lincoln Way district candidates vie for the seven seats on the junior college board to be elected April 15. The district covers Will, Grundy, Kendall and Kankakee counties with incumbents and new residents from unincorporated areas. The board plans to start July 1 and may consider locating the college in Joliet downtown for transit access.
About 300 youngsters joined the annual Easter egg hunt staged by the Mokena Lions Club in Community Park last Saturday. Club members were to provide a total of around 600 to 1,000 eggs but ended up with roughly 600. Prizes were awarded for specific egg numbers rather than total eggs found. Some eggs were numbered this year and prizes went to those numbers.
The Will County Board of Supervisors unanimously rezoned 332 acres in Du Page Township from farm to industrial use for Chansler Western Development Company. They also established a planning committee to investigate a potential county airport, with open meetings and wider board oversight. A $10 per meeting raise for newly elected supervisors was approved, bringing pay to $25 for committee sessions.
