Sales Tax a Major Income Source for Villages

The report shows the four cent state sales tax, half cent for municipalities, accounted for a large share of 1962 village revenues. Chicago received 29,210,610. suburban towns such as Joliet 786,576 and Ev. Park 286,161 also show strong takes, with many communities earning significant funds from the tax.

Toothbrush House Drops Wheels in West Haven Debacle

Flyers touted a Toothbrush House display at West Haven near 167th Street, but a cutting torch ignited the trailer during setup. Promoters planned over 500 units bolted to concrete pads, with wheels removed, to be placed between village homes. School superintendents Jerling and Barnes attended a meeting noting district enrollment implications for students north and south of 163rd Street.

Spellers From Oakview Reach Will County Finals

Oakview school pupils Lynn Anne Marek and Wayne Allen Mooney won Section 7 of the Will county spelling contest to advance to the championship speldown at Pershing school Joliet on April 6. Seeding alternates are Nancy Landfried of Arbury Hills and Jo Van Rheden of Frankfort. The Oakview event hosted 16 contestants.

Five Seek Frankfort Grade School Board Seat

After weeks with no candidates, five residents file to run for the Frankfort grade school board. Incumbents Lambrecht Hossbach Hankinson term expiring in April. Candidates Eisenbrandt Hedge Ebert Nissen Woodman all live within the village. Election set for April 13.

Voters Set Ballot On Fire District Bonds Saturday

Voters in the Frankfort fire protection district will cast ballots on March 30 to approve a $130,000 bond issue for a new fire station. The proposal covers a $100,000 building, $14,000 site, $8,000 landscaping, plus architect and legal fees, to house six pieces of apparatus and provide meeting space and possible dormitory facilities. The district argues current village hall space is needed for municipal use and is inadequate for equipment. Four polling sites open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Frankfort village hall, Ann Rutledge school, Green Garden town hall, and Arbury Hills school.

Town elections set in New Lenox with two tickets

Complete Town Tickets In Field At New Lenox on April 2 kick off a series of area elections including April 13 school votes and April 16 village officer races. Incumbent Walter Yunker faces no strong opposition for highway commissioner while supervisor John E. Francis runs against John A. Brent on the Town Ticket.

Gas Explosion Sparks Fire at Frankfort Home

A gas furnace explosion in a Frankfort home on 93rd Ave. caused a fire that was controlled by the fire department within an hour. No one was injured. damage to structure and contents pegged at about 2500 dollars. Fire chief notes heat melted plastics on the first floor and wind complicated suppression.

Knight Life Production Hits Lincoln Way Stage

1963 version of Knight Life roars into final rehearsals for April 5 and 6. Lincoln Way students present the seventh annual vaudeville style show with student written lyrics and music by Larry Cullison. The farm sequence adds We Make Tortillas. Curtain at 8 pm each night in the school auditorium. Tickets from the music department or at the door. Proceeds go to the FM radio station fund and stage needs.

Hope for May bids on FAI-80 right of way and grade separations

Plans to acquire right of way for the FAI-80 expressway through Will County east of Joliet progress with a target to bid by May for grade separation structures to be built this year. Officials expect extensive work in 1963 and eventual completion next year, amid toll authority and federal funding hurdles and traffic growth pressures.
