Mokena Man Wounded in Viet Nam Fighting
1st Lt. Henry Barnett U.S.M.C. son of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Barnett of Mokena was wounded in action in Vietnam on March 5. He suffered a missile wound to the abdomen and chest. condition serious but prognosis fair. He serves on the USS Repose hospital ship and is expected to recover. A telegram was delivered to his parents. Barnett has been in service two years since graduating from Lincoln Way High School.

New Lenox Library Joins State System
The New Lenox Township Library Board voted to join a regional library system being formed for Will, Kankakee, Grundy and Kendall Counties. The system will provide central services, cooperative purchasing, processing, cataloging, a reference center and staff training. Ronald M. Whitaker was elected to the system board to represent New Lenox. The 1966-1967 budget was tentatively approved and Irene C. Peterson was rehired as librarian.

Funeral for Viet Nam hero Thomas Hartung in New Lenox
Funeral services were held for PFC Thomas Hartung killed in Viet Nam on February 24. A requiem high mass was said at St Jude’s Church New Lenox with interment in Rock Island National Cemetery. Hartung, 19, a Chicago native raised in New Lenox, served with the 4th Cavalry and was killed on a front line mission. Survivors include his parents sister Pamela and grandmother Mrs Bertha Nieland.

Lincoln-Way Areas Schools Win Federal Grant For Reading Program
Lincoln-Way Area Schools have received a federal Title I grant under the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act to establish a remedial reading program. Participating schools include Lincoln Way High, Providence High, Sacred Heart High, and several grade schools. a $15,370 budget will fund a teacher workshop, staff hiring, and equipment purchases.
