Medicare Meetings At Mokena and New Lenox
Residents are invited to two Medicare meetings on March 4. A Joliet Social Security representative will explain program aspects at the Cooper Hostert garage show room in Mokena from 10 a.m. to noon, and at New Lenox Village Hall from 2 to 5 p.m. Those 65 and older must sign up by March 31 to obtain voluntary private insurance covering doctor bills, costing about $3 monthly, deducted from social security checks.

International Friendship Rally In Frankfort School Gym
The Trikena Neighborhood of Girl Scouts selects International Friendship as the theme for a rally. Brownies Juniors and Cadettes from Mokena New Lenox Arbury Hills Frankfort Lincoln Estates and Cherry Hill will entertain in a program that serves as the climax to Girl Scout Week in the Frankfort school gym on Sunday March 13.

Members of the Mokena grade school Band competed at the Illinois Grade School Band Association solo and ensemble contest on Saturday February 26 in Earlville. Perry L. Friedman directed the group. Sixteen from Mokena earned firsts and two from St. Mary School. First division winners included Nancy Fuley flute David Kohl and Bonnie William.

Surprise Snow Clamps Down on Area Driving and Contest Results
A heavy wet snow surprised the area on Monday causing hazardous driving with vehicles leaving the road and fuel oil spill from a Rogers Cartage truck near the Wieland farm. Local musicians earned medals at a school contest with St Mary's soloists winning gold and silver in several divisions.

New Lenox Soldier Killed in Viet Nam at 19
PFC Thomas F E Hartung of New Lenox was killed in action in Viet Nam on Feb 24. He would have turned 20 on March 12. He served in the 4th Cavalry as a gunner on a personnel carrier and had enlisted August 19, 1963. His parents Joseph and May Hartung await word on his body and funeral plans. He had spent 13 months in Korea and returned home on leave in December before deploying Christmas Day.
