The Frankfort school board discussed an addition to the grade school tied to a kindergarten program and urged larger flexible classrooms. A dry line system will be installed in the attic to prevent freezing pipes. State aid rules require an available classroom. Frankfort currently cannot meet this and relies on a nearby community to provide space.
Twenty-five high schools compete in the second annual Lincoln-Douglas Debate Tournament at Lincoln Way Community High School starting tomorrow at 5 15 p.m. The event ends with a banquet Saturday evening. A United Nations speaker appears at 4 00 p.m. Saturday. New Trier won the Mice trophy last year. Joliet was runner up. James Kin of Lincoln Way earned the leading negative speaker award and will return.
Area villages face April elections as police magistrates shift to salary pay with fees turned to treasurers. Local councils may set any magistrate salary. no state minimum or maximum applies. Debates cover multiple rounds and a Lincoln Douglas traveling trophy with regional and out of state entrants and judges from Joliet and Sun Times.
At a meeting of captains and lieutenants in New Lenox, officials decided to place new fire equipment on the north side of the Rock Island tracks. A new piece of equipment arrives about May 1. A committee seeks space on the north side, with plans for two fire barns one for each side.
Walter A. Harnack 51 of 208 Pacific Street Frankfort died January 12 at Billings Hospital Chicago after months of illness. Born August 2, 1909 in Green Garden township he lived in Frankfort 40 years. He was active in community affairs and served in multiple local groups. Survived by wife Phyllis, son Ronald, daughter-in-law Diane, grandson Scott, sister Lydia Bettenhausen, and brothers Alvin and Fred.
Bids for a new New Lenox post office building will be accepted until 3 p.m. February 27. Prospective bidders may contact Roger T. Stevens, real estate officer, Chicago, for details. The facility, to be built on Cedar Road, will cover 6,842 square feet paved area and 2,604 square feet interior work space with a south entrance and rear delivery area.
The New Lenox sanitary sewer system, costing about 500000, is now in operation. Treatment began Monday January 16, with over 200 property owners already obtaining permits to connect as more join daily.
Three Lincoln-Way Community high school seniors Gayle Harling Sue Ann Shoop and Judy Wheeler were voted the D A R Good Citizenship Award by the Des Plaines Chapter.The selections are based on dependability service leadership and patriotism. Harling is the daughter of Leroy Harling of 251 Center Street Shoop is the daughter of Vivian Shoop of 156 Parker Street both in Mokena and Wheeler is the daughter of Rupert Wheeler of 80th Avenue Frankfort
The Lincoln-Way board approved issuing 145000 in tax anticipation warrants to cover needs through June 1 1961 with 100000 for educational needs and 45000 for the building fund. Meeting also tabled a 1600 bill dispute, appointed members to advisory groups, and noted changes to the music and arts programs.
The Oakview school addition at New Lenox, halted after Nord Co defaulted, is now let to Chicago Heights Construction. A $100 daily penalty accrued since October, offset by attorney fees. the bonding company bears about $45,000 in loss. The project adds five classrooms, a gym, an auditorium, and a large stage serving as a band room.
Burglars stole two safes two lamps two typewriters and about 500 in cash from the Arbury Hills real estate offices at U S 45 and 193rd Street east of Mokena early Saturday morning January 14. One safe was recovered later near Berwyn, according to the sheriff.
Wayne M. Gregory, 23, of 1113 Alain Drive, Joliet, jailed in Will County after two 14 year old New Lenox girls report he tried to coax them into his car at Hickory and Pine. He is charged with disorderly conduct and will appear January 24 before Justice R R Konopack.
The Naomi circle of the New Lenox Methodist Church will serve a breakfast on Wednesday January 25 at 9 00 am. Bakery goods will be sold with recipes. Those needing rides should contact Mrs Rowe ena Wolfinger HU 58485. A free will offering will be received.
