Over the past week area residents endured rain and a cold wave with a 61 degree high followed by a plunge below 20. Sun and mild days gave way to drizzle hail and snow. Christmas Day brought heavy snowfall and icy roads with state police warning motorists to stay home. Driving remained hazardous with numerous accidents.
Martin Stanisz of 10808 First St and Dorceta Marie Karstensen of Beecher were named winners of Joliet Elks Lodge No. 296 annual Youth Leadership contest. Stanisz, a Lincoln Way senior active in NHS Mu Alpha Theta Latin Club and sciences, aims for medicine. Karstensen, Beecher High senior, columns senior yearbook co editor and Beecher librarian, majors in French and may join Peace Corps.
