Five Area Residents Die In Auto Accidents

Five area deaths from car crashes last week mar holiday time. James Stephens 54 of Tinley Park killed near Worth while driving on Oak Park Avenue. Two others, Peter Vandeworth Jr. 31 of Orland Park and Patrick Lydon 30 of Dalton, died near Worth after a collision involving a Palos Park witness. A Palos Park mother Mrs Lee Lieberstein 43 and her son Seth perished when a cement truck collided with their car on Southwest Highway near 106th Street. Surviving families include spouses, parents, and several children across Tinley Park, Harvey, Palos Park, Orland Park, and Forest Park.

Dist Gov Of Lions to Visit Mokena Club January Fourth

Lions District 1-B Governor Ted A. Massey will speak at the Mokena Lions Club regular meeting at Ritt's Restaurant January 4 at 7 pm on Lionism and organizational structure. He will later meet with the club's Board of Directors.

Vegetable Growers Annual School Dates Set

The Cook County Vegetable Growers plan a three day program with meetings in LaGrange on January 3 South Holland on January 5 and North Cook County on January 4. Speakers include William F Whiteside Joe Vandemark and University of Illinois and USDA specialists. Topics cover economics of vegetable prices labor housing licensing act and production problems. Growers are urged to attend these industry sessions.

Christmas Lighting Contest Awards in Mokena

Vernon Upp of North Brightway wins first prize of 15 dollars in the Mokena Chamber of Commerce Christmas lighting contest. James Ho sea earns 10 dollars and William Mahler 5 dollars for second and third prizes. Honorable mentions go to Edwin Schellhase and Arthur Omland. Judges include SherIf Knater Justice Mackay and John Francis.

Former Green Garden Farmer Dies at 79

Conrad Langmeister of Frankfort died Wednesday Dec 20 after a short illness at 79. Born Sept 26 1886 in Green Garden township he farmed there most of his life. He married Lydia Lembke in 1911 and moved to Frankfort in 1939. He is survived by a sister, four nieces, two nephews. burial at Pleasant Hill cemetery after services at St Peter's church Joliet.

Bradley honors two Lincoln Way alumni in Beta Omicron Delta Kappa

Stan Korista and Kenneth Weber, former Lincoln Way high students, are elected to Bradley University's Omicron Delta Kappa high honor. Weber, a Theta Chi member active in ROTC and varsity sports, and Korista, a Theta Chi leader active in engineering societies, are named to the scholarly leadership service fraternity.

Scout program aid urged by Mokena Chamber

At a Mokena Chamber of Commerce meeting Art Omland, scout leader, urged broader support for the local Boy Scout program. He invited interested residents to contact him for volunteer work. A film titled Seconds for Survival was shown, detailing the U.S. defense system.

Lincoln Way driver education program lauded by state official

State Inspector George T. Wilkins praised Lincoln Way high school for meeting the Illinois Driver Education act and school code standards. He commended the extensive program, use of test and audio-visual aids, added a second instructor, and strong classroom practice linkage after visiting on November 27.

Death takes A. S. Cavett, Tinley Park pharmacist

Alan S. Cavett a longtime Tinley Park pharmacist known as Doc died at his home after a brief illness. He opened Tinley stores in 1936 and 1952 and expanded to Mokena. A WWI veteran active in civic affairs, he is survived by two sisters and a brother. Funeral services were held at Hirsch chapel with burial in Evergreen Park cemetery.

Mokena Grade School Girls Sing For Lions

The Mokena Grade School Girls Ensemble sang at the Mokena Lions Club Christmas party at Ritt's restaurant in Frankfort. The annual event featured group carols and the ensemble listed twelve members with Mrs. William Clark as director and June Swanberg as accompanist. The Lions announced plans for the annual Sweetheart dinner dance at Silver Lake Country Club on February 10 with Al Carver's orchestra providing music.
