New Lenox Fire District Purchases $18000 High Pressure Pumper

The New Lenox fire protection district bought an $18,000 high pressure pumper from John Bean Co of Lansing Michigan. It will deliver about 750 gallons per minute and carry 500 gallons of water with 1600 feet of hose. Delivery is slated for March 1. The unit meets underwriters specifications and will improve hydrant coverage in Cherry Hill to support a Class 8 rating.

Christmas Vespers at Lincoln Way High School Sunday

Christmas Vespers an annual Lincoln Way high school event will be presented Sunday afternoon December 18 at 3 o clock. The concert features the band and chorus directed by Robert C Taylor and Tom D Olson with dramatics by Melvin Donoho and stage settings by Kenneth Kinney. The program includes The Holly and the Ivy Yuletide Festival Where is the Newborn King and The Christmas Story performed with narration and tableaux.

Lions Club Seeks Toys Clothes for New Lenox Baskets

The Lions club of New Lenox seeks donations of usable clothing and toys for Christmas baskets to be distributed in the village and township. Items may be left at Glenn Valy’s home in New Lenox or Roy Pfiefer’s address. A windshield washing project will be held Sunday Dec 18 to raise funds.

Dina elected head of Northern Illinois Civil Defense group

Dina, Mokena civil defense director, was elected president of the Association of Civil Defense of Northern Illinois at a meeting last Sunday December 11 in Wheaton. The organization includes 31 counties and coordinates civil defense activities across the region. New officers include vice presidents Robert McFadden Olaf Sorensen L Mae Reagan Roy C Blackwell and secretary Reagan.

Christmas Coffee Hour and Civic Forum Gatherings Planned

The Frankfort community plans a Christmas coffee Sunday December 18 at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Irving Rudman from two to four PM. On December 21 at 7 30 PM the Civic Forum will sponsor a Christmas Line at the grade school with local choirs. The group recently erected a Christmas tree at Tate’s Kool near Route 45 and 30 and lists future projects including teen activities sex education remedial reading and a community library. Vandalism reported at under construction house in Mokena

Builder Richard Pokorny of Lincolnwood reported four windows broken at 49 E Reverest Mokena a frame house near completion. A 4 by 5 foot Thermo pane was broken and total damage about 200 dollars. Damage likely occurred last Thursday with discovery Saturday.

Airlift TV Lessons Start Early Across Midwestern States

Mokena public school officials approve initial funding as Purdue led project plans to beam taped lessons from an airplane over Indiana to schools in Indiana and parts of Illinois Kentucky Michigan Ohio and Wisconsin. Surveys show about 526 518 pupils in 16 939 classrooms plan to preview courses in early 1961 with 86 percent from elementary levels.

Pupil groups in ARBURY HILLS Summit Hill FRANKFORT and Wietendorf plan annual Christmas programs this week and next. ARBURY HILLS party Wednesday Dec 21 2 to 3 30 p.m. FRANKFORT grade school program Tuesday Dec 20 7 30 p.m. Wietendorf program Wednesday Dec 21 8 p.m. includes songs and skits.

Mokena Man Dies In Hospital

William F Verschoore a 59 year old resident of Mokena died Saturday December 10 at Silver Cross hospital after a lingering illness. He was born July 15 1901 in Atkinson Illinois and worked for the Rock Island Railroad beginning September 1 1926 later transferring to Mokena as a section foreman. He also served part time at Cooper and Hostert garage. Survivors include his wife Adeline Deist two daughters Arlene Hutchison and Marie Schwenger both of Geneseo Illinois his father Peter Verschoore of Atkinson three sisters Kathryn Croegaert Atkinson Edna Bouwens Geneseo and Lillian Jones Green Rock two brothers Ray Geneseo Clarence Atkinson and several grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday from Sonn tag Burgess and Wylie Funeral Home Joliet with Rev Robert H King pastor of the Mokena Methodist church. Burial was in St Johns cemetery Mokena. Arrangements were by Zechlin Funeral Home Frankfort Goose Land and pupils of local schools performed Christmas programs and church events are listed with dates through December 23 1950.

Summit Hills School Open House Draws 100 Plus Attendees

More than one hundred parents, children and friends attended the Summit Hills School Open House last Saturday night. Guests toured the building, met Principal Charles Bellis and staff, and spoke with the Booster Club. A plaque was presented by Booster Club President Mrs. Marvin Rogalie to Edward G. Feeley, Aubury Hills developer, with thanks from Summit Hills School District 161. Hostesses served refreshments and a membership booth was staffed by Mrs. Thomas Tanis and Mrs. Robt Dickerson. Six room mothers managed the guest book.

Lincoln Way High Names Three Students of the Month

Gayle Harling of Mokena Carol Peterson of New Lenox and Cheryl Crabtree of Manhattan were chosen as Student of the Month for leadership school spirit and scholastic achievement. Harling is National Honor Society president and cheerleader and chaired the Homecoming committee. Crabtree led the Juniors gift sale on November 19 and Peterson organized the operetta crew and ushering duties.

New Lenox Seeks More Bids for Police Car Lease

Village of New Lenox recessed its Dec 7 meeting to Dec 21 to seek additional bids on a squad car and also considered lease proposals. One bid received, board rejected purchase on single bid, noting leases cheaper per comparable towns. Also reports delivery of snow plow blade and undercarriage and purchase of a cinder spreader. Vehicle Licenses On Sale For Mo Kena Residents

Motor vehicle licenses for 41961 are on sale for Mo kena residents at the village clerk's office at 403 North Wolf Road. The license costs 3 dollars until February 1961 ends. starting March 1 the price rises to 5 dollars. An advertisement in this week's issue provides further information.

The Mokena public library will be closed Wednesday December 21 and 28 for the Christmas holiday. It will resume its regular schedule starting Wednesday January 4.

Motorist Turns In Fire Alarm Saves Dwelling

A passerby who called the New Lenox fire department at 7 45 a m saved Joseph Scott’s two story home on Parker road from a roof fire caused by chimney sparks. Firefighters arrived quickly and had the blaze under control with minimal smoke and water damage, confining the fire to the roof.

Mokena Woman Mary Bree Bredahl Dies Suddenly

Mrs. Mary Bree Bredahl, 61, died late Monday afternoon at her daughter Clara Petersons home in Mokena apparently of a heart attack. The Mokena inhalator squad responded but arrived too late. She had moved to Mokena with the Petersons in October from Chicago. Removal was to West End funeral home Chicago Heights, with services planned in Rockford.
