Frankfort and Mokena village boards approve hiring planners to draft a land use map with an $8,300 plan survey cost. Federal funds are expected to cover half the cost leaving about $4,150 to be raised by the two villages, with additional hoped for school and potential utility or rail contributions cutting village shares further.
Florine Cain, the sole woman engineer on a 50 person staff at Lockheed’s Van Nuys missile systems division, rose from Joliet and Mokena roots to a top aero nautical career. She studied at Joliet Township High School and Joliet Junior College, then Purdue before joining Lockheed after 1951. Cain’s late husband died in 1954, and she now lives in Beverly Hills with Richard Cain, a contracts administrator, while they enjoy sailing and car racing.
In the 12th circuit election set for Sept 2 in Will Kankakee and Iroquois counties, Watseka Republican David H. Oram opposes Joliet Democrat Donald F. Delaney for the unexpired Roscoe C. South term. Campaigning focuses on turnout after Labor Day weekend and school openings.
Area districts announce September 2 and 3 start dates with required dental and physical exams for first and fifth graders. Six year olds by December 1 eligible to enroll. principals change at St Marys. Orland Park adds new wing. book rentals and health records required for all first time enrollees.
The Lions Club hosts a Sunday picnic and formal dedication of Mokena Community Park from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Local officials and speakers from the University of Illinois and Hinsdale will participate. Free pony rides, pop, and ice cream are provided. residents are urged to bring baskets.
Lincoln-Way sets the new year with a freshman half day on August 29 from 8 15 to 11 44 a m to introduce staff and policies. Sept 2 brings a full day with guidance group assignments and schedule cards. Fees due Sept 2 or 3 total 14 00 including book rental student accident insurance hall locker towel laundry and activity ticket.
Two Mokena men Lyle McKenzie 19 and Gerald Gerri are charged with larceny in an information filed by Will County. They allegedly burglarized the Tinley Park bowling lanes on Aug 23 by breaking a window and used the exit to flee. McKenzie confessed to the break in and was injured during escape. Gerri admitted involvement. Loot valued at about $30. Bonds set at $2000 each. Second related break-ins at Dari-Castle stand on Wolf Road cited. Gerri denied Dari-Castle role. Court date scheduled before County Judge John C. Cowing for Aug 29 in Joliet.
