Summit Hill School Bond Election Planned for Simpified Financing
Summit Hill School district moves to issue bonds for a new building to serve all pupils this year. The site near U S 45 will be leased to District 161 with room for future expansion. Developers propose a $150 000 project at a cost to the district of about $35 000 hoping to cover two extra rooms for outside subdivision students. The Arbury Hills developers pledge to donate the completed school, but no signed agreement exists yet. District 161 attorney Krusemark was to obtain a guaranteed title instrument from the developers by Thursday night.

Harley Mann 74 Dies Visiting Son in Chicago
Harley A. Mann 74, former Mokena resident, died last Friday August 12 at his son Robert’s home in Chicago after a coronary occlusion. Born September 5, 1885 in Elkhart County Indiana, he worked as a conductor then confectionery businessman before joining Kellogg Switchboard. He lived in Mokena from 1950 and later moved to Hot Springs Arkansas for health reasons. Survived by wife Bernice Warren Mann, one son and three grandsons, with funeral rites held at Hirsch Chapel Tinley Park and cremation at Mt Hope.

In August 1960 a storage tank at Mokena Grain held 15 tons of grade A molasses valued at 900 dollars. A company truck bumped the tank, the spout dislodged, and the molasses flowed out within seconds creating a gooey creek. Workers spent the day covering the spill with coal screenings as flies swarmed the site.

Lincoln Way High Considers Tax Referendum in September
The Lincoln Way high school board sets September 17 for a referendum on two measures. One would raise the educational fund tax rate from 86 to 99 cents per $100, boosting expected revenue from about 347,963 to 400,562 dollars. The second would raise the transportation tax from two to five cents per $100, aiming to cover roughly 20,000 dollars with state aid. five polling places will operate from noon to 7 p.m.

Fugitives From Georgia Chain Gang Nabbed Near Joliet
Two white convicts Ralph Junior Heath 27 and John R Hoynie Jr 35 escaped from a Georgia chain gang. After robbing and abandoning several hitchhikers from Akron to Chicago they were captured near New Lenox and turned over to the FBI. Morgan, a California man, identified the duo. They face Dyer Act charges for crossing state lines with a stolen car.

Injured In Car Crash At New Lenox
Three people were hurt when two cars collided at Francis and Cedar roads last Thursday at 8 55 p m. Carl Carlson 25 of 110 Beverly Avenue, Joliet resident Frank Sonnenberg 65 and his wife Martha 67 all were treated at Silver Cross hospital. Sonnenberg charged with failing to stop Sonnenberg was traveling west on Francis Road and failed to heed the stop sign. Carlson was northbound on Cedar Road and accused of driving too fast for conditions. Bakerville ambulance transported the injured. Mrs Sonnenberg suffered serious injuries including multiple fractures.

Burglars Strike Twice In Home Of Mrs. A. Lauffer
Mrs. Arthur Lauffer of Lockport R 1 Homer township faced two burglaries within ten days. The first occurred July 31 between 4 and 7 p.m. through a basement door, with a mantel clock transistor radio silverware jewelry and arrow heads stolen. The second on August 9 left tracks to the basement door and took china service for 12 linens silverware and cutlery. Mrs. Lauffer widow said many items are keepsakes and not replaceable.

New Year’s Celebrations Lead to Fines on North Wolf Road
Robert Bobbie of Chicago was fined 100 dollars plus 15 dollars costs after shouting Happy New Year and singing Auld Lang Syne on the evening of August 13. Judge August Werner noted the celebrant helped himself to free beer at a picnic before the arrest by Officer Joe Heim on North Wolf road in Mokena.

A New Lenox girl, Gay Facinelli, daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Facinelli, won the blue ribbon in Illinois pigtail contest at the Springfield state fair. Her braids measured 32 1/2 inches, five inches longer than the runner up. The Facinellis live at 168 E Wood St New Lenox.
