The Frankfort Chamber of Commerce announces a Saturday Aug 26 Sauerkraut Jamboree featuring a German band from 1 to 5 pm, kiddie and pet parade at 2 pm, go cart races at 2 pm, tug of war at 4 pm, water fights at 6:30 pm, and a band concert at 7:30 pm followed by dancing in the State Bank parking lot.
The Rev August J Bueltmann pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Mokena took part in a three day workshop of the National Lutheran Parents Teachers League at Concordia senior college Fort Wayne Ind He has served on the national council five and a half years and edits Nur ture His address Family Life Education was one highlight The convention also featured Martin Koehneke Concordia River Forest and an original playlet Child Insurance by Bueltmann The banquet guest Dr George Beto Concordia Seminary Springfield heads state parole board attendance reached about 600 of the league total 675 local groups and 80 000 members across regions
Timber the cocker spaniel owned by Mrs E C Olsen of Shady Acres Kennels New Lenox appears in a full page Life magazine ad Aug 11. The seven year old dog trained at the kennel with two bicycles in a back to school auto company campaign has modeled for about four years in magazine ads and TV commercials.
Area women are invited to join Will County’s 125th anniversary by forming Frankfort and Mokena chapters of Celebration Belles. The groups will stage an old fashioned style show on Sept 7 with 25 chapters planned countywide. Call Marcia Miller in Mokena or Frances Briedert in Frankfort to start local chapters.
The Mokena Happy Hour Kindergarten opens September 5 with a few openings available. Mrs. William E. Howard of New Lenox returns as director and classes meet in the Fellowship hall of the Methodist church. The program is state approved, non profit, and run by the Mokena Woman's Club for children five by December 1 from Mokena and nearby areas.
Voters in Ann Rutledge school district No 56 C will cast ballots on Saturday August 19 to approve 69000 in bonds for adding five classrooms remodeling the older building and upgrading facilities The plan includes brick veneer fire resistant construction and modern washrooms with polling at the school and voting hours from 12 noon to 7 pm The board expects enrollment to rise toward 130 by September with about 180 to be accommodated and urges public support for the bond issue.
Frankfort grade school will open bids for a new five room addition at a special meeting on Tuesday August 22 at 8 p.m. The $145000 bond issue passed by a slim margin and a State Bank of Frankfort will buy the bonds at 4 percent interest. The board plans to repaint water damaged classrooms and set Sept 11 for the budget hearing with a tentative 1961 62 budget of 262979.30 divided among building educational site and construction funds.
Will County School Supt Verne E Cracker approves amended state aid claims for the 1960 61 school year and forwards them to the state superintendent for payment. Total pupil transportation costs and state refunds are detailed for districts including New Lenox 122 Mokena 159 Frankfort 157 C Summit Hill 161 Schmuhl 121 Marley 125 and Lincoln Way High.
The Mokena village board discussed delinquent water bills and unpurchased vehicle stickers. They authorized shutoffs after 10 day notices and police will contact sticker violators. The post office driveway will be widened to 24 feet with light pole relocation at the builder’s expense. The board also approved more hydrant flushing hoses, sewer manhole inspections, and repainting hydrants and the water tower once weather allows.
Tentative budget for Mokena Carpent er Street and Willowcrest schools totals 148 181 dollars with 10 288.80 for building fund 119 790 for educational fund and 18 103 for bonds and interest. The public hearing is scheduled for the regular school board meeting on Tuesday September 12. The August board meeting discussed improvements at both schools with no decisions made. Landscaping bids for Willowcrest will be opened at the September meeting.
Police seek Jeffery White, 45, of Crete after he overpowered guards and fled Manteno state hospital on Monday. He was committed last June after threatening his wife and children and firing a gun to scare them.
The Rev. Richard A. Crist began a new service schedule at Grace Episcopal Church 203 N Pine St New Lenox on Aug 6. Sunday Eucharist times are 7 30 a.m. and 10 a.m. Weekday services run 9 30 a.m. Wednesdays with 5 p.m. evening prayer. Fall plan includes Sept 10 7 30 a.m. Eucharist 9 a.m. church school and 10 a.m. family service. He succeeds Rev. Humphrey Dixon who retired for health reasons.
