Summit Hill School seeks 21 cent tax increase

Summit Hill School District 161 faces acute financial strain from rising enrollment and space needs. The board authorized Supt. William Avila to push a referendum on boosting the educational tax rate from 96 to 117 cents per $100 of equalized assessed valuation, with voting set for Sept. 24.

Mokena approves district library vote by voters

In a special referendum, Mokena voters approved creating a library district 218 to 114 with 335 total ballots cast and three spoiled. A six cent per hundred tax may fund the district, which expands access to state library resources and regional centers. The board will serve until 1968.

Mokena Schools Prepping For New School Year

With under three weeks left before opening, Mokena public schools plan to start August 31 and St. Mary Parochial School on September 6. Principal Sister Theresa Clair returns to St. Mary, enrollment is projected at 440 with 15 classrooms, and staff includes lay teachers Dolores Barenz Patricia Flynn Marion Kruzich Josephine Purateri Helen Van Fleet Charles Van Slyke Jr. Thomas Durkin Jr. Perry Friedman. Superintendent James Ennis reshuffles grades into Carpenter Street and Willowcrest buildings. total enrollment forecast around 600. A part time police vacancy, book rental $9.50 and milk $5, and Happy Hour Kindergarten opens September 6 with 25 pupils.

Hearing Set Aug 22 On Closing Two Roads In Mokena

A public hearing is scheduled for August 22 at Willowcrest School in Mokena to consider closing two roads Maple Ave west of US 45 and Sarton Ave south of 183rd St due to I-80 construction. The Illinois Division of Highways issued notice.
