Mr and Mrs John Matasovic owners of OxO farm off Francis road west of Mokena raise Herefords. The Lake County Fair showcases their cattle sweep with prizes for top animals and herd quality.
The Frankfort and Mokena grade school bands will depart Saturday August 7 traveling to Galena and Dubuque by bus and train. They will visit Gen Grant’s home in Galena and take a Mississippi River boat ride before returning by 11 p.m. A combined concert is set for August 11 at Willowcrest school grounds. Nearby livestock wins noted include purebred Herefords with multiple champion ribbons and an OXO Silver Rajah award. The Matasovics and Jim Henken highlighted in Illinois fairs and Will County 4-H events.
Gerald Voigt an 18 year old from Green Garden township died July 28 at Silver Cross hospital from injuries from an auto accident near Frankfort on Center road. He had graduated from Peotone high school and was a member of St. Pauls church. Survivors, services, and burial details are listed along with a family reunion notice for the Spiess family in Mokena this Sunday August 8.
Mokena voters approved a 105000 water bond last Saturday and the village board moved to improve the water system. The plan starts with selecting a well site and getting state water board approval, then bidding for drilling and later for a pumphouse, pump, meters and chlorinators. Additional bids will address mains extensions and storage tank repairs.
In Saturday's referendum the proposal to issue general obligation bonds to improve the water system carried 151 to 128 with eight spoiled ballots among 415 total. The plan previously failed by 31 votes about a year ago. Officials cited hot dry weather and a broken Joliet well as factors. Boardmembers pledged swift action to start the project.
Irving Holm a farmer from north of Mokena died Sunday August 1 at Silver Cross Hospital after a long illness. Born July 9 1928 in Blue Island he moved to the area in 1938. He is survived by his wife Betty Kratzenburg a daughter Barbara three sons Allan Dennis his parents and siblings. Visitation was at Hirsch Funeral Home and services were at Immanuel Lutheran Church Mokena with interment at Skyline Memorial Park Cemetery.
