Indianapolis October 23 Four hundred thousand coal miners were ordered to strike November 1 by John S Lewis acting president of the United Mine Workers of America The order affects virtually all bituminous miners in the United States It followed failure of union leaders and operators representatives to agree on wage demands Lewis will go to Washington to confer with Secretary Wilson.

In the case State of Missouri vs Reuben Wainscott the jury failed to reach a verdict after an all day session in circuit court at Jacksonville.
