A rescue effort drew 922 workers to the site as reports of entombment circulated before being corrected. The dead are D B Hamilton and Harry Odle of West Frankfort. Injured workers escaped by dropping to floor level. Authorities ordered rescue teams from across southern Illinois. about 500 men were initially thought trapped, a figure later denied.
