City council met in adjourned session with most members present. A water pipe on Carpenter street was laid and a fire plug readied. An ordinance funding bonds of 500 each at 4 percent over ten years was passed with bids to be advertised in St. Louis and Moberly. The reservoir grounds rental was referred to the public grounds committee. An alley opening in Robertson addition sparked debate over property owner costs and a Noonan objection. The council adjourned to June’s first Monday.
Mrs and Mrs A J Long received a crate of strawberries from their son Monte Jenkins now fruit grower in Stillwell Indian Territory. He sent a card asking for a sample, but the berries were already canned. Monte is achieving success in his southwestern home.
Yesterday afternoon a woman, Mrs Tydings wife of Dr RB K Tydings, stumbled on the sidewalk opposite the Democrat building. Her three year old son, grasping her hand, fell and struck his head and elbow, receiving a severe bruise and injury to the arm. A physician attended to him and he was resting easy today.
W P Cave buys Mrs B M Rothwell’s vacant block between Fifth and Sixth streets extending from Girlinan to McKinzle The plan calls for vitrified brick pavements and granitoid walks around the block Improvements will determine whether one mansion or a series of handsome dwellings will be built on the site A very fine home is likely to occupy the plot.
Rev W A Simmons returned last night from the Southern Baptist convention in Kansas City. It is said to be the largest religious meeting ever held in Kansas City with twelve thousand people in the great convention hall. The event is expected to bring great good to Baptists generally.
The Ladies Auxiliary to the Knights of Father Mathew hosted a reception at Mrs. Richard Noonan's home at Burkhardt and Fifth streets in Miss Short's honor. She departs soon for a southern tour and Alabama relatives. A solid gold cross was presented to her amid music and socializing.
Waterfield driving HH. T. Owens' dray in the Merchants hotel alley overturned and heavy plumbing fixtures rolled into an excavation hole. Waterfield landed atop the cargo and survived unhurt, seen as a miraculous escape by bystanders.
A county wide rally of Christian Bible schools will be held at Central Christian church on Thursday June 8. An all day program features music and literature with dinner served in the church parlors. A large crowd and a profitable meeting is expected.
Two more cars of ties have reached the ground for the electric road project. Rail unloading is underway by Daniel A. O'Donovan as rails that had waited on a side-track are moved. Work will proceed once curved rails for street corners arrive and dirt will be laid early.
The Democrat reports plans for a $10,000 residence in Southwest Moberly to be built this summer by a family of high social and financial standing. Details are not yet public, but the project promises one of the county’s most elegant and modern homes with upscale appointments. The story notes the details are pending finalization and will be shared later.
A small hurricane moved through the southeast part of town yesterday evening. Large trees were blown down, sheds damaged, and residents sought shelter in cellars.
