Joseph Medill Dies Veteran Tribune Editor at 76

Joseph Medill long time Chicago Tribune editor died in San Antonio at 76 after moving there for health two months earlier. Born April 6 1828 in St John New Brunswick he rose from law study to publishing Weekly Republican in Coshocton Ohio and later established the Cleveland Daily Plain Dealer precursor. He joined Chicago politics aided by Republican ties before buying and leading the Tribune from 1874 onward.

The Jumbo Wrangle of the Wabash Strike 1878

A vivid recall of the March 17 1878 Wabash Western division strike when locomotives were overturned and damaged. Police from St Louis aided efforts to quell unrest. no fatalities but many injuries and extensive property loss. The episode remains a defining communal memory.

Dr W P Rucker of Lewisburg West Virginia father of congressman W W Rucker of Keytesville had a leg amputated just below the thigh last Thursday due to rheumatic gout in the leg removed. He has stood the shocks of the surgeon’s knife better than expected according to the Times.
