The bill regulating express charges passed the senate Wednesday afternoon. Senator Parris of Crawford championed the measure which secured twenty six ayes and one no, with Senator Minsby of Harrison County the sole oppose r. The act sets wax t minister rates for transporting goods wares and merchandise.
The schedule covers express routing for all state points within 150 miles. Articles up to 15 pounds or value under 50 dollars cost 25 cents per additional 25 pounds or fraction, with 15 cents added for each extra mile above two miles. Joint rates apply when transit crosses multiple express lines, and violations are misdemeanors with fines from 100 to 1000 dollars.
A bill to apply the state barbers law to cities with 1000 population or more failed in the House by three votes. The Senate approved a companion measure extending the law to cities of 1000 or more, but the House adjourned with a similar bill stalled and likely to return for a vote.
The House approved Senator Dickingon’s bill to abolish special juries. Proponents argued defendants seize on the special jury system when they dislike the regular venire.
A freed bull introduced by Depoy was killed in the house on Thursday missing twenty votes for passage. The text notes that anyone can set it up without fear of flagrant imprisonment.
The house approved creating the office of state dairy commissioner with a salary of 20 per year and travel expenses. The chief duties include inspecting creameries, public dairies and cheese factories.
The senate passed a bill granting circuit judges $100 per month for expenses when holding court outside their residence. The measure sets annual compensation at $3,200 for circuit judges.
The McGee Presbytery adjourned in Salisbury with plans to meet in September at Union, Boone county. Debates centered on consolidating C P and Old School Presbyterian churches. unionists were outnumbered 24 to 19. Rev A M Buchanan and Rev Berry chosen for Fresno assembly duties. consolidation decision to be made at the general assembly in Fresno, May.
W R Nowta thanks customers for support in Slaving business in the city and announces continuation of trade in the same building for the Moberly Produce Company with plans to pay higher prices. The baby born to Mr and Mrs Treddy Craig last night died this morning and was buried in Oakland.
Conferees declare no compromise and no more talks with rival blocs. The joint assembly may vote rapidly for twenty four hours to force an election. Representative Bitunger and Wereng allies insist Niedringhaus cannot win and back Col Kerens as the party’s choice.
The Moberly Produce Company through manager J. M. Stanther buys out W. K. Noel’s poultry and produce business on North Fourth Street and will operate it as a branch. Noel will remain at his current location. James Riley recovers from injuries after a stabbing by Thomas Thompson last week. Thompson’s estate, probated in Paris, LA, totals about $35,000. Charles N. Martin named guardian for minor heirs.
A local ad from I B Forney promotes silk and wool suitings, cotton suiting, lace, embroideries, linens, muslin underwear, hose, belts, and shopping bags. It invites customers to visit and see the assortment, claiming the goods are of the best grade to date and offerings are reasonably priced.
Superintendent of Public Schools Co Lilly and Circuit Clerk M J Lilly bought the John Floyd store on Reed Street. They intend to move to California by May first with Mr Floyd and his family. The building will be rented for business to yield good returns on the investment.
Bound over in Morp case for obtaining sugar from O Weele Bros under false pretenses and selling it to a Moberly merchant. Bail set at 300 dollars but not posted. Reports say Robert McCormick hears of a Dakota brothel fire victim badly hurt in a railway wreck and cannot visit.
Forney the clothier buys the Reed street store buildings formerly housing G H Werries and Geo Young with dry goods and jewelry shops. Reported price ranges between 12900 and 16000 though not disclosed. The Opera House and theatre downstairs will be rented. remodel plans expect upstairs to become office rooms next year while no immediate changes occur this summer.
Engineer Chas. Cummings and his family left this afternoon to settle in California. The departure was accompanied by the best wishes of numerous friends. Curt Sears of Cairo has secured a job in the Wabash shop.
