Adjourned City Council Session Debates July 4 Preparations

City Council met in adjourned session at City Hall with six members present and two absent. They discussed permits for July Fourth refreshments, park cleanup, and a mass invitation to ride in the parade. Ordnances set paving bids for Coates and Barrow streets, and street grade matters were reviewed along with license actions for peddlers and express firms.

Governor appoints Vicksburg Siege Commission in Missouri

In Jefferson City on June 18 Gov Dockery named a ten member panel from Confederate and Federal troops who fought at Vicksburg to assess Missouri troops positions. The slate includes Maj Rainwater secretary Gen I M Cockrell Capt P L Pitts Capt James SYNAMON and others with additional appointments for the Board of Managers Missouri School for the Blind and an inspector.

Death Claims Paid in Missouri Reach 6 Million

State insurance chief T Crear reports 6 million dollars paid for death claims in Missouri during 1000. Totals spread across cities led by St Louis with over 2.6 million, Kansas City 21,000, and Jefferson City 55,000. The largest individual policy paid 116,456 for Charles Hodgman of St Louis.

British Defeated and War Dispatches From Pretoria

The report notes Lord Kitchener cabled from Pretoria about a clash near Welmansrust Station 20 miles south of Middleburg.
