Supreme Court Finds Parts Of 1919 Income Tax Law Illegal
Jefferson City Mo July ruling by Judge Fred Williams finds portions of the 1919 income tax act retroactive and void for applying the 11 2 percent rate to incomes from January to August. The 1917 rate of 7 percent applies through August 7 1919 and after that date the new rate. The 1916 tax is upheld except for its attempt to apply the new rate to the entire year. The Meyer Aros frug Co of St Louis suit tied the ruling to city tax collection but is not a broad invalidation. The state had assumed the decision covered all legal objections to 1919 tax.
