Rural carriers in Hannibal oppose the 720 dollar annual maximum pay for routes of at least 24 miles. About 12 percent of routes meet this length, with the rest facing 18 dollar per mile reductions. Carriers cite high costs for horses and equipment and claim low take home pay even after expenses. Some Hannibal drivers use two horses, others only one.
The Herald reports New York capitalists have purchased 20 000 acres of coal land between Yates and Higbee and will immediately sink a shaft on the Duncan homestead about two miles east of Yates, signaling active development by the Armstrong group.

Westbound Wabash Pacific Express pulls into Chillicothe at about 2 30 AM. The conductor reports a man atop a passenger coach to Officer Gallagher, who refuses to cooperate.

Dr DaK Dutton assisted by Dr Baker of Salisbury yesterday operated on J W Gravey of Clinton Hill who suffered a long cataract. After prior care in St Louis failed, doctors removed the eye ball as a last resort. Surgeons hope sight in the remaining eye will be saved.
