GHAINS advertises complete chain stock with many new ladies and gentlemen patterns. It highlights gold and silver items and a large watch stock. The note urges customers to compare prices before buying elsewhere and to consult the jewelry department for books and items.
The Commercial Club held a harsh weather meeting with President O Keefe and Secretary Curran in attendance. Five new members were admitted J W Thackston R T Moffett John T Williams W D Scampton and J D Madd plus four more applications W C Harrington Ti I Tolman N F B Haworth J W Wills. The club plans to print by laws and post a large roster of current members in good standing.
A late cable from Ghee Foo reports the Port Arthur Chee Foo cable was cut yesterday. No further details are provided on the incident or possible causes.
The Business Men Association will hear J I Walker of St Louis this evening about a leaf tobacco processing method for cigar makers. His plant employs about 300 workers and could be a significant addition to St Charles, with potential relocation to Moberly discussed by the Commercial Club.
The national United Mine Workers of America issued a tribute to M A Hanna calling on members to cease work at noon on Friday February 19 the day of his funeral. John Mitchell L Lewis and W B Wilson signed the notice from Indianapolis. Also mentions Miss Howard and Mrs J C Ridings visiting in Cairo.
A St. Petersburg cable reports Japan violated Chinese neutrality by landing troops at Yin How railway point and seizing Tsin Wan Dau to threaten the Russian line between Mukden and New Chang. The Chinese location at St. Petersburg protests. Yin Fow is a Chinese sea port on the Gulf of Liao Tung.
Commander Staunton of the gunboat Melena reports disturbed conditions at New Chiang China and investigates rumors that Russian officials have delayed American and British merchantmen. If the consulate is endangered he will land bluejackets and marines to protect Consul Miller.
Navy officials believe the Russian second class cruiser Boyarin was torpedoed and sunk by the destroyer Hegator in the Port Arthur attack last Sunday. A St. Petersburg dispatch says the Boyarin blew up February 13 after hitting a mine. A London Express report describes Alexieff’s later interior inquiry and a dramatic shooting of a junior officer.
St Louis financier H. Rumsey and representative Clark arrive in Moberly stating an electric railway will run from the Merchants hotel on Reed street to Miller's Park and be in operation by the July fair. The plan includes expanding gas and electric plants and supplying electricity for mines between Moberly and Huntsville. Harve Pilcher to manage the plant. Rumsey to return March 7.
Conductor Tom Griffin ends his Wabash link as No 73 heads to Brunswick. Mrs Chase Kitchen and her children depart for Hamilton Iowa to settle. Charlie runs an engine in that location. Conductor O P Darnell returns home with lagrippe after urgent calls at Luther and Wentzville. W P Winn and family depart for Denver after resigning from the shops. Engineer Wallace Wray recovers eye injuries from a derailment, eye healing expected. The Wabash station at World’s Ball entrance to host all times, a large new structure 125 by 240 by 66 feet with 12 000 capacity, plus added waiting and baggage rooms. Missouri rail officials hold a meeting at Hannibal to review alleged switching privileges. National railroads plan higher fixed charges to fund future improvements.
The Missouri and Oklahoma Central Railroad company headquartered in Guthrie Oklahoma was chartered Tuesday to build a 250 mile line from Carthage Missouri through Joplin Missouri the Quapaw reservation and Oklahoma to Woods County. Capital stock is 5 million.
A Washington dispatch reports Mrs. Wm P. Vandegrift will come to prosecute her husband Charles William Price Vandegrift who is under arrest in Moberly on bigamy charges. They wed in New Jersey seventeen years ago and separated three years ago. she planned to sue for divorce upon learning of his second marriage. Vandegrift once ran a Washington business and led union circles. he formerly headed the Washington Phimbersnian.
Postmaster announces rural letter carriers may observe February 22, 1964 as a holiday and no mail delivery will be made to patrons on that day. Signed by jioux W. Scor, Postmaster.
Hon C E Whelan will address citizens of Moberly and vicinity at Halloran's Theater Tuesday February 23. The event is hosted by Woodmen Camp Moberly No 2, with local talent, music, readings, and an address by Whelan. Admission is free and attendance is encouraged for Woodmen and Royal Neighbors and friends.
The Knife and Fork club plans a semi monthly meeting and banquet tonight at Steve Binz s. Members expect to dine on turkeys bought, enough to last a week.
