Reports warn coal shortages will halt activities across the Middle West with theaters churches and schools to close for much of the week. About 8000 Chicago plants face shutdowns as coal supplies run dry. Railroads in Oklahoma may suspend service within a week if cuts persist and miners resist wage increases.
The Theodore Ryan Post of the American Legion held its first annual banquet at the Merchants Hotel. Officers elected for 1920 include Commander Roy Edwards and View-Commander A M Voelker. A minstrel show was planned, and remarks from delegates to the national convention were reported. The event followed with a business meeting and discussions on beneficial registration and universal military training. The next national convention is set for September 27 in Cleveland. The Chamber of Commerce announces tonight’s monthly meeting with fair to cold conditions expected locally.
Washington announces Joshua W. Alexander of Missouri has been selected by President Wilson to be secretary of commerce, succeeding William Redfield Seld. Alexander, a former chairman of the merchant marine committee, resides in Gallatin, Missouri and has long served in Congress. nomination will go to the Senate.
Attorney General Palmer urged Americans not to yield to fear and grant wage demands that would keep living costs high. He said new wage agreements would raise the cost of living for three winters and criticized Garfield backed proposals as creating inflation and instability. Palmer spoke via telegram to a Missouri citizens committee and urged further conference with operators and miners.
The first session of the annual state grange meeting drew 85 women from various counties with additional delegates expected. Miller Johnston, editor of the Journal of Agriculture, urged caution on costs of living and farming output while John Howit, Randolph County agent, stressed regional agricultural conditions and the value of such gatherings. State officers including Worthy Master C. O. Raine and others attended.
A call from Paris, Missouri reports an urgent relief need as cold conditions threaten suffering. The Joenuel committee released a coal car from Pennsylvania to be shipped to Paris for temporary aid. J. P. Nichols bought and moved into the Kimmell property at 311 Johnsen Street.
Fittsburgh Kansas December 2 The Wilson mine three miles east of here yielded the first real output under the governanr volunteers. Several camps are ready and 400 to 600 men were rushed to Pittsburgh last night, with hopes that six mines will produce fuel before night. Soldiers have been distributed in districts under martial law and began duty last night.
Wes Osborn once of this city Luther Tourson and Henry Richardson guards from the penitentiary accompanied negro prisoners sent here or under suspicion in the beating and robbery of Elmer Thomas. The group was taken to Moberly to face the grand jury in session investigating the killing of James Anderson following the slugging and robbery.
W. A. Longbottom of Missouri State Life Insurance, based in this city, is praised by the home office in St. Louis as one of the best representatives. Mexican reply expected to be a refusal, with negotiations on Jenkins’ freedom continuing and possible Hidalgo treaty links awaiting U.S. stance. Cordova surrenders to Mexican government after aiding Jenkins’ capture, while local charitable sale proceeds fund clothing for the poor through December 4.

New York City December reports H. C. Frick steel magnate died today from ptomaine poisoning. Funeral private at his residence Thursday with burial location yet to be announced. Frick's death follows a long career shaping the steel industry.
