The Rollins Street viaduct will be ready for traffic in about a week to ten days with sidewalks and final work to follow. City engineer notes delays from railroad involvement and sewer work, urges public patience, and explains efforts to finish the tunnel to first class condition.
Attorney Thomas J. Tydings received five dollars as first prize for the oldest and best preserved book in the historical exhibit at the Missouri State Fair. Robertson's History of America, an Edinburg printed work from 180A, 116 years old, in full leather binding, survived in fine condition. The prize came with a blue ribbon, mailed from Sedalia by ten o'clock, and the book was bought years ago from a Washington dealer for 25 cents.
About five hundred jobless men including ex soldiers sailors and marines paraded downtown St Louis to protest enforced idleness. Banners read we fought for the flag and this is our reward no jobs were offered at a nearby 10 cent store after two hundred thirty men applied for one open position.
Washington reports Sen Lodge urged that American delegates push for publicity while not opposing private talks. He opposed open sessions proposed by Sen Harrison and suggested committee private session discussions. A separate Harding administration statement said canal negotiations with Germany are impracticable, responding to senate debate on pen sessions.
London reports the ZR-2 passed Skeaness at 9 am and neared Pullman by noon as it readies a cross Atlantic attempt next week. The giant dirigible, amid weather concerns, may delay the voyage to next year per naval air officials.
The Democrat editor Dr Sparks Brom reports a card from Dr L P Sparks who attended the national convention in Milwaukee. The note from Angel's Plight Macatina Michigan says travel was light last year and asks Keeley to water him on return. Joe found the plies pat Milwaukee. It was as painted. He will be home soon.
Prof. J. W. Finnell and wife of Choctaw, Oklahoma, spent the weekend with Mrs. Finnell’s brother Denis Matthews of Buchanin Street. They have been vacationing in Huntsville and expect to return home next week where Finnell serves as superintendent of the city schools.
The prosecuting attorney filed suit for the State of Missouri against Tess Powell for disturbance of the peace. The case is set for the October term in Moberly and is the first criminal case on the October docket.
Sadie M Goodman through her attorneys filed suit for divorce alleging marriage on April 30 1912 and co habitation until June 5 1921. She seeks restoration of maiden name and separate maintenance. No children. Frank O Goodman runs a barber shop in Moberly.
The Gray estate fight ends in 160 acres of land and multiple property shares being settled in circuit court. J W Gray died May 21 1920 leaving a widow Susan J Gray and nine children. A partition suit sought to set aside the father's will and divide land and personal property among heirs. The parties eventually compromised with the widow and her children for 2100 and signed a contract. After the widow died a new will left one daughter a dollar and divided the rest among four children. The four beneficiaries under the mother’s will then arranged a partition with the other side to finalize the estate under the contract and distributions were completed.
P M Walkin sues P O B M and L M Woerner owners of the Grand Annex for 1268.40 plus interest and costs. The petition alleges Hill and Woerner bought Walkup’s business on Sept 46 19148 for 5220, cash 2200 and a note for 2600 at 6 percent interest. Monthly payments began at 50 with various later sums totaling 731.80, leaving 1268.40 due. Walkup’s sale included stock and fixtures such as soda fountain, cases, machines, tables and chairs. Judgment for 1268.40 plus interest and costs sought. Hunter Chamiér represent plaintiff.
A fall pattern continues with cooler temperatures expected tonight and into tomorrow. The forecast notes a slight drop in thermometer readings especially across the northwest portion, bringing a cooler feel to that area.
The Barnes circus introduces a 12 foot 5 inch pachyderm named Puske imported from India, weighing about twelve tons, and aged between 70 and 80. Owner Barnes hopes for a 150 year lifespan with stable health, while trainer Gardener signals readiness to teach him typical elephant skills.
The Capper Tincher act to curb gambling in grain and cotton futures passes after Senate and House action. The conference report is adopted and the bill moves to President Harding for signature. The measure aims to regulate futures trading and reduce speculative gambling.
The Senate passed the deficiency bill by 50 to 16. It provides 45,500,000 for the Shipping Board and 200,000 for the disarmament conference expenses. Mrs. A C Gladney displayed needlework at the state fair in Sedalia winning premiums and is entering work at Jacksonville fair.
The House today passed a resolution censuring Senator Reed of Missouri for his attack on Representative Volstead of Minnesota, leader of the drys, in Washington D. C. on August 23.
The house defied the senate by rejecting a Stanley anti search and seizure amendment to the arti peer bill and passed the conference report on the beer bill with a substitute. Norfolk Virginia August 23. Five rum runners carrying about a quarter million dollars worth of whisky were pursued by federal agents after a rapid dash through a Virginia Cape. The ship carried over 2006 cases of Scotch whisky loaded in Nassau Harbor from a former submarine chaser.
Moverty officials of the Wabash and systemwide managers received word that due to business conditions the railroad will reduce mechanical staff to enable a wage cut totaling 100,009 dollars next month. Conferences determined how many can be spared without crippling operations. The deepest cuts will occur at Decitur with differences between divisions noted. About 75 workers will be affected across long shops and outside points, effective September 1.
A local man nicknamed Bill forgot his pants while walking Read street, triggering laughter among friends. He hurried to a clothing store and ordered his official uniform for the Elk convention parade. Organizers hope 300 to 400 lodge members attend in line.
Moberly merchants who cashed checks for 15 dollars each from a man posing as a farmer were arrested in Quincy after trying the scheme there. Prosecutor O Brays notes the duo hoped to settle for 115 in Moberly and Quincy, with costs, but no money has been paid yet. A Quincy paper company representative said the Quincy chief plans to release them once the settlements are made.
The Randolph County Circuit Court held a brief June session with Judge Walker. Twelve cases were heard and disposed, seven continued, one dismissed at plaintiff costs, one dismissed at defendant costs, and three withdrawals. The term adjourned to September 5 with the September term set to open in Huntsville on Monday.

Detected by undercover actions of Clinnen, the scheme involved Davis Cleveland and a secur ity house, with $20,000,000 in notes at 2 percent. Six men are in custody as suits expand against further forged securities totaling millions.

In Chicago on August 28 a patrolman shot and killed one of five alleged robbers, wounded another, and captured a third after attempting to arrest them following a complaint that a man had been held up. The bandits fled prior to the arrest.
