Memorial Arch Dedication Honors Hartford War Heroes
In Hamtroop Connecticut on September 17 a memorial arch for soldiers and sailors was dedicated. Hartford declared a general holiday. banks and factories closed. streets filled with citizens and visitors. George Keller designed the arch on Ford Street facing Bushnell Park. The rough brown stone monument with two towers rises over two hundred feet and features a terra cotta relief depicting war scenes. Bushnell Park hosted tents feeding an estimated ten to thirteen thousand people. Colonel Bissell presented the monument to the town on behalf of the building commission, and General James R Hawley accepted and spoke.
