In Sturgis, South Dakota, after a wife bears 22 children, Charles Stegmeyer is beaten by six men for abusing his wife. He was seized, hanged from a tree with a rope, then given a drubbing and told to leave town by morning.
In Faulkton South Dakota on September 10 a peculiar hunting accident killed John Shurber. While hunting near town his party pursued a coyote in a wagon and after Feaster reloaded his gun a sudden turn hurled him off. The gun fired striking Shurber in the face as he sat in the wagon. The team bolted and ran a mile before being stopped. Shurber died soon after.
Attorneys in Gregory and nearby counties push to abolish the full term of the circuit court due to a rush of settlers for the Tripp county opening. A petition asks Judge F E G Smith to postpone, aiming to avoid turning away business visitors. approval seems likely.
At a Sioux Falls city council meeting a resolution, urged by the Sioux Falls Retail Liquor Dealers association, would cap saloons by license renewal. No current saloons would be closed, but new licenses would not be issued until there is one saloon per 700 residents, pointing to a target of 21 saloons for a 15 000 population.
Nicholas Savina, calling himself Prince Savine and Count De Toulouse Lautrec, was arrested in Antwerp on charges of cashing stolen coupons. Chicago reports his identity as Count De Troulouse-Lautrec after he produced Chicago naturalization papers. He previously escaped Siberia after Russian police extradited him from Bremen in 1905. He rose to prominence in Chicago since 1895, working various jobs before his criminal record became known.
Chicago reports a clash between city high school frater nities and the board of education over a new anti frat rule. Secret societies plan chapter houses and rush events on the first day of school, despite suspensions for members connected with schools.
Albert Teddell, 80 or 81, of Cinnaminson and Folsom Streets in Roxborough, is reportedly cutting teeth and discarding glasses after years of reading aid use. He now shows two new teeth and notes gum soreness signaling more may appear as his sight improves. His Roxborough family has deep roots. one ancestor lived to 103.
William Fisher, badly wounded, swore his wife Margaret Filber did not shoot him after a home invasion in Willowdale. Police found a 38 caliber revolver with a discharged cartridge and a nearby club. Margaret bears bruising from a quarrel. Fisher signed a will bequeathing all to Filber before transfer to hospital.
Spearfish South Dakota September 9 Vegetarians are common but a meat eating dog with wolfish flesh appetite is unusual C F Ernest a rancher near the city owns a vegetarian collie that gorges on turnips beets and other vegetables each morning while milk bread and table scraps are the only other foods he will eat
Rapid City South Dakota reports continued wolf depredations despite state rewards and poison. H M Crowhurst from the Bad Lands near Scenic describes 20 young colts killed at the 61 ranch and 15 at Brown ranch with other losses totaling thousands. Full grown horses are attacked and killed or hamstrung, wolves reportedly travel 50 to 60 miles in a night.
The Chicago and Northwestern railway released a new passenger schedule with two extra trains between Omaha Huron and Oakes, each with sleepers. Through trains with sleepers will run Chicago Huron Deadwood. The changes aid state fair week September 7 11 and may force some veteran conductors to relocate.

Chicago officials report railroads from Illinois and other lines will contest the Interstate Commerce Commission ruling on through rates to the Missouri river. The 9 cent per 100 pounds cut on Missouri river through traffic takes effect September 15 and may seek an injunction. Rehearing is requested by Santa Fe Illinois Central Alton and Wabash, with Rock Island St Paul Burlington Northwestern Great Western as defendants. The decision centers on through rates below the sum of local Mississippi and Missouri river rates, a change seen as crucial by Chicago St Louis jobbers.
Parkston backers file petition with the county commissioners to submit a county seat removal from Olivet to Parkston in November. The 1400 signers are bona fide residents and voters. Parkston argues it is rail connected while Olivet is inland.
Mr and Mrs Chris Bertsch attempting to cross the Jim river south of Menno when a quarantine watchman raised a stick to stop them. Their horses backed into a ditch, tilting the wagon and throwing Mrs Bertsch with a small child in her arms to the ground. Her arm was broken and she was injured. A damage suit may follow.
In Corsica South Dakota on September 8 a 10 year old boy, son of R. Wolbrink, was adjusting a mowing machine along the highway when the sickle gear caused injuries. Both feet were badly lacerated with severed toes on the right and the left heel cut. Doctors say recovery is likely without complications.
Bernard Cunnnigan a veteran of the Mexican and civil wars dies at his daughter Mrs J L Bee 801 residence eight miles southwest of Armour South Dakota He was born March 17 1812 in Longford Ireland and died aged 96 He served in the British navy aided a 1846 mission to British Columbia and later the Mexican war under General Zachary Taylor He wandered the globe sharing his memories and adventures in a long life of travel.
The State Medical association in session here elected officers: Dr. S. A. Brown of Sioux Falls as president, Dr. Smiley of Mitchell as first vice president, Dr. W. F. Moore of Tyndall as second vice president, and Dr. R. D. Alway of Aberdeen as secretary treasurer. The next convention will be held at Aberdeen.
In Cincinnati on September 8 Mrs. Charles C. Pennington filed for divorce charging her husband prevents sending their children to school or permitting home teaching. She is a daughter of Indiana Supreme Court Judge Maier.
Mrs Cornelia Dawbarn Peck won a divorce from Harry Thurston Peck in a South Dakota court on grounds of desertion. The decree gives custody of their 16 year old daughter Constance Saltonstall Dawbarn Peck to Mrs Peck and notes settlement of property rights as fair to both parties.
Relatives in Ebner Ja report the death of John Klemme at Ebner Ja the first family death in 57 years. The Klemmes raised sons and daughters and recently celebrated a 62nd wedding anniversary.
Two athletes from Pierre, Robert V. Loughlin and Wil H. Starky, set out on September 7 to walk 150 miles to Huron. They plan to reach Blunt, Highmore, Miller, and Wolsey before arriving in Huron for the state fair September 7 to 11. A band will greet them at the city limit and escort them through town.
Four miles from Madison, Lake Madison, dry for fourteen years, has filled again. A feeder lake, Lake Herman, also revived earlier but receded, while Madison restored enough water to operate a pleasure steamer. County commissioners had tried to obtain an artesian well to restore volume, but the lake recovered without it.
Miss Bessie Sinkular living south of Dallas South Dakota killed herself with a shotgun yesterday afternoon. She had run millinery business at Herrick until fire destroyed much of town last July. Accused of starting the blaze she was arrested and held to circuit court in $1000. Officials say brood over trouble led to act. Sinkular moved here during the rush and proved up on a Rosebud farm.
Emanuel Mandel, first vice president of the Mandel Bros., Chicago's prominent merchant house, died of paralysis last night in Basle Switzerland. A dispatch received today confirms his death and his standing in the business community.
In Brookings South Dakota on September 5 a report from Professor James H. Shepard details experiments showing nitrous acid bleached flour delays digestion. He notes digestion slows 24 percent in confined tubes versus 7 percent in open tubes and warns the practice may prompt new laws.
Bridgewater South Dakota reports night watchman George Miller has secured an automobile to patrol the town. He will offer free rides in the vehicle to any hobos from any location to the village jail.
United States district court opens fall term under Judge Carland with old cases resolved. Grand jury, led by foreman Ben P. Hoover, includes members from Aberdeen, Gettysburg, Sioux Falls, Vermillion, and other cities. New indictments await after jury selection and anticipated trials.
Captain and Mrs. J. E. House celebrated their golden wedding in Canton South Dakota with many friends. They were married at Portage City Wisconsin in 1858.

In Claremont South Dakota Phillip Ellery, who once vanished with a farmer Jesse Barton’s horse and was forgiven, disappeared after supper a second time. A companion reported he did not enter the barn and a broad search followed with no trace found. There is concern he may be temporarily deranged due to recurring head pains.
In Pierre on September 4 the Supreme Court ruled that the primary election law mandates a specific nominating method for elective offices. It states party nominees cannot appear on the ballot unless no candidate wins the primary or a vacancy occurs after nomination. Plaintiffs seeking ballot placement are denied.
South Dakota Presbyterian synod sessions set for October 1 in Rapid City. In Clear Lake South Dakota on September 4 Judge Marquis approved temporary alimony of 26 dollars per month for Mrs Etta Rickleffs and her nine children. The allowance equals 2 77 dollars per person and covers support during the divorce proceedings. The plaintiff owns a good farm in Grange township.

Eight year old Louisa Hart daughter of Mr and Mrs John Hart east of Manchester DeSmet South Dakota Sept 4 died after ingesting strychnine found by a child. The baby suffered convulsions before doctors arrived and despite rapid transport the child did not survive.
Sept. 4 Miller reports Lours Peterson a prominent farmer was killed while hunting when a dog discharged a gun in the wagon the load of shot entering his neck and killing him instantly. L Wilcox was struck in the eye by a glancing shot but not seriously hurt.

Watertown South Dakota September 4 Mayor John W Martin of Watertown was named for the ticket at a county central committee meeting. He fills a vacancy created by the withdrawal of S J Mace. Martin is a well known figure having run for governor four years ago on the Democratic ticket.
Chicago September 4 A real estate note confirms reports that William D Boyce the millionaire publisher and his wife with three children who lived at the Virginia hotel until last winter have separated. Boyce conveyed the Boyce Building to the State Bank of Chicago and reduced the family residence on Wampden court and Wrightwood avenue to a nominal one dollar, while Boyce allegedly set up residence in Bismarck North Dakota and Mrs Boyce travels in Europe.
