The North Dakota Democratic state convention opened in Fargo with about two thirds of delegates present. M. A. Hildreth was named temporary chairman and F. M. McLain and W. H. King as temporary secretaries. Attendees cheered when Hildreth urged ending the state’s solid Republican alignment. The pope’s authority rumor floated in Rome as Mgr. Folchi nears restoration after recent losses.
Reports detail new cholera cases aboard ships Normannia Rugia Moravia and on Hoffman island with several deaths. Quarantine measures tighten as medical teams inspect immigrant depots and tenements while ships Corean and Persian Monarch wait in harbor with unclear releases.
On the Lake steamer India en route from Duluth to Buffalo a sick eight month old child of W J Sables, traveling from Two Rivers to Syracuse, died after a day with cholera like symptoms. Dr Dwight and Cholera Inspector Farnum term it sporadic cholera and the body will be cremated after on board disinfection before the ship proceeds. Buffalo health authorities were notified.
A train full of immigrants about three hundred strong from Europe arrived in Chicago over the Grand Trunk railroad during the night. A second train bringing about seventy immigrants came in over the Wabash road early in the morning. Their coming caused some excitement.
New York health official Dr. Jenkins clarifies his stance on the president's quarantine proclamation. He emphasizes safeguarding the future, deferring overrule to higher authorities, and preferring safety. He cites twenty days’ quarantine for ships from infected ports and notes compliance with executive orders. Homeopaths plan cholera hospitals in Chicago to prove superior outcomes and humane care.
Detroit health officers informed railways that immigrants from infected ports will not be allowed to enter or pass through the city. The Grand Trunk and Canadian Pacific roads have stopped bringing in immigrants to Detroit.
In response to cholera found in New York harbor, authorities order three days observance for all travelers arriving from New York to Manrip on Sept 7.
In Milwaukee on September 7 the bail of 2000 for Linderfeldt the embezzling public librarian was settled. Judge Sloan suspended sentence and released Linderfeldt though the state contended the case was not finally disposed of. District Attorney Brown objected but Sloan overruled citing practical difficulties in producing the defendant.
The Bureau of American Republics reports a commerce and navigation treaty between the Republic of Uruguay and the German Empire granting citizens and subjects of each country full rights and privileges in the other's territory. The agreement was just negotiated and officially informed.
