In Pierre South Dakota the supreme court upheld the secretary of state, denying a Thorson demand to certify his name only for the First congressional district. Elections were certified by the votes cast, not by Thorson’s insistence on district label.
A small fire at the Indiana state prison in Michigan City broke out late last night. Warden James D. Reid, 52, directed staff to safeguard prisoners and prevent escapes. He collapsed and died as the blaze neared extinguishment, a result of the excitement. Reid was well regarded by staff and inmates alike.
Washington report shows public debt rising by 3,278,325 to a total deficit of 17,371,468.08 as the treasury closes February with a working balance of 30,826,057.23 and a general fund of 89,523,207.59. Deficit is about ten million less than last year. receipts exceed 113,000,000, five million above the prior year.
Chicago reports the Santa Fe case on freight-rate increases prompts the railroad to consider an aggressive stance toward shippers. Counsel seeks the names of shippers at the hearing and will probe profits on affected commodities. Vice President Melcher cites wage-cost increases since 1906 7 and argues higher rates are needed. he notes safety appliance laws, while beneficial, do not save workers.
Sioux Falls attorney questions constitutionality of state game law citing nonresident fees. Attorney General cites police power and residency distinction as valid. Test case planned Sept 10 with Minnehaha County game warden arresting the attorney to seek Supreme Court ruling.
Frank T. Tucker, a progressive Republican candidate for attorney general in Wisconsin, leaped from a bridge into the Fox River at Oshkosh. Accused of grafting via state envelopes in campaign literature, Tucker reportedly escaped a guard and vanished. The body was not recovered.
A half dozen companies of the South Dakota National Guard competed in a drill at Sioux Falls as part of Roosevelt day exercises. Co A of Sioux Falls earned the first prize.
Forest fire near Red Fern, South Dakota, sparked yesterday, covered about 50 square miles of timber in the Black Hills reserve. High winds spread flames. four hundred fighters struggled until after midnight. Two fires near Dumont were subdued by Fourth cavalry from Fort Meade.
Senator Crawford and Mrs. Crawford depart to join a 10 member U S delegation to Mexico for the centennial celebration of the republic's establishment. The group includes Senators Overman Guggenheim and four presidential appointees. three House members and other ambassadors. They board September 1 and stay in Mexico September 8 to 22 aboard a specially equipped special train.
Congressman C H Burke arrives in Pierre from Oklahoma after investigation into alleged graft in Indian lands. He says the findings justify the charges and will be released in a Washington report, with actions expected to benefit the Indians. He declines to release details before the report is submitted.
New York cloakmakers return to work after a nine week strike that cost strikers about 1.5 million dollars weekly and pushed losses on employers higher. The dispute ends with recognition of the union and concessions, ending sweat shop fears and shifting to a preferential union shop led by Brandeis.
The Cheyenne river and Standing Rock lands filing resumed at the U S land office led by Judge James W Wit ten. The first 8000 numbers were called last spring. 2400 filed for homesteads. From 8000 to 20000, many will not file and remain open to general entry after October 26. Many good homesteads may remain, though distant from towns.
The Episcopal church group calls on Mitchell women to contribute articles for a city exhibit titled City of Mitchell for the State Fair at Huron. Items include fancy work paintings rugs quilts knit goods photographs and more. Articles will be collected marked returned and guarded. exhibit ships Friday September 9 with supervision by Mrs. A D Tinsley and a visiting delegate.
Milwaukee officials seek a Sitka area farmer after he cut the air hose to stop a night train. The man fled as the train halted sharply. A later Mobridge report suggested the found body hanging from brake beams was likely intoxicated, with a whiskey bottle found nearby.
The state railway commission has granted licenses to 982 grain warehouses to buy grain in the state for the year. Of these, 387 are bounded as storage warehouses. Additional applications are arriving and the list is expected to grow before the buying season ends.
