Canova man killed by accidental shotgun discharge
Lon Johnson of Canova, 27, was accidentally shot returning from a hunting trip. Riding in a buggy with a Winchester between his knees, the gun discharged and the charge entered above the heart. He died about an hour later. He owned a billiard hall and left a wife and one child.

Prairie Fire in McPherson County Wrecks Hay and Buildings
Aberdeen S D October 9 A prairie fire swept northern McPherson county destroying large quantities of hay and several small structures. The blaze started when threshers failed to extinguish firebox embers and spread as crews aided neighbors. A boy rescuing water tank crew was burned and fainted, clothing burned from his body. Horses were shot after they burned. Nearby at Columbia a spark from a Northwestern engine started another fire threatening farms. A threshing crew saved John Hillett’s house and barn. Over 100 tons of hay destroyed. Farmers near Bath ship wheat themselves to avoid elevators earning 4 to 7 cents a bushel.

Poisoned play leads to child death in Madison South Dakota
In Madison South Dakota the youngest child of Chris Reusch died after a bottle of bedbug poison was shared while children played nearby. An older boy and girl, along with a 10-year-old girl from Mail Agent A. J. Webster, fell ill after procuring and tasting the substance.
