Otto Wehling aged 13 and Charles Weeks aged 14 died when two powder houses southeast of Singuxy exploded Saturday morning. About 5 900 pounds of dynamite and tons of powder detonated, tearing bodies to fragments miles from the scene. A coroner's jury investigates while hunters near the site are suspected. no witnesses remain.
United States Marshal Seth Bullock arrived in Armour to take charge of the Cantonwine general store. Wm. Moore was named custodian of the property as the case proceeds toward a hearing on October 10 in Sioux Falls. The incident follows a September 29 robbery in which $33,000 in currency, $2,000 in gold, and $300 in silver were reportedly stolen.
Preparations are underway for the Dakota conference of the Methodist Church to meet in Sioux Falls starting October 21. Bishop Wilson, national president of the anti saloon league, will preside and is expected to aid temperance supporters before the county option vote. The conference runs through the rest of the week with nightly addresses by notable speakers from across the country.
Yankton South Dakota October seventh. The glee club plans a two week Christmas trip through the northern state with a selected group after a competitive examination. The choir shows increased enrollment reaching 240 by week two.

August Muellec suffered a severe threshing accident at Daniel Boettcher’s farm near Parkston when his right arm was drawn into revolving knives after dropping an oil can into the feeder. Doctors report the limb may be saved without amputation.
Chicago reports auditors examining A. Gooth & Co. statements found the earlier $1,682,000 surplus for the year ended April 30, 1908 is not a surplus. The capital stock is impaired by about $1,200,000, making the condition worse than anticipated.
Mrs. Plora Avery arrived in New York after a 2000 mile journey from Spearfish in search of her daughter Myrtle who was taken by her father. Myrtle is at the New York Catholic Protectory after being abandoned on the streets. Avery seeks custody through Heinzelman & Walker at 346 Broadway.
Ben Boles was driving to Tulare when a lightning bolt struck a telephone wire above him. The wire fell and struck Boles, knocking him senseless as his horses ran away with the load. Neighbors cared for him. the bolt burned his feet and caused other injuries, but he has recovered.
Canton South Dakota October 6 fire discovered at 8 pm destroyed the Logan elevator of Sheldon the South Dakota Grain Co and the Gemmill elevator. Firebrands blown by a 50 mile gale threatened the city but bucket brigades saved other structures. Losses about 12 000 on the elevators and total around 14 000. Hunting elevator saved despite multiple flare ups.
H T Mayo a farmer near Wagoner South Dakota found a flowing well after probing a bubbling spring with a fish pole. A hire man helped locate a boiling spring about eight feet deep that now provides a steady water supply.
A small boy with matches started a serious blaze on Fred Berg’s farm southeast of Arlington. The fire destroyed the barn and winter hay—outs. Local businessmen are raising funds to equip a YMCA gymnasium and hope to have it ready for winter use.
Belle Fourche South Dakota reports a drop in cattle and sheep shipments for the season. Officials say 1907 saw over 1700 cars move to market, while 1908 may not exceed 1200. Western South Dakota towns along Milwaukee and Northwestern lines are becoming active shipping points as Butte county cattle endured a hot dry summer.

Stanley Schmidt of Ellis was kicked on the head while leading a horse to water and is reported to die. He planned to surprise his father by doing all the chores, the incident occurred in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 5.
Spokane reports a hog owned by J. M. Johnson charged with disorderly conduct after allegedly destroying crops. Jacob Morey killed the hog when a Nez Perce precinct constable refused to arrest it. Johnson won a $1 fine plus costs at Vollmer, appealing to the district court. Hog valued at $6 to $8.
In Brooklyn a New Thought church led by Rev. Mrs. Foote Marsh opens with the belief that anyone may become anything. Believers will sing with their eyes to improve vision and avoid spectacles. Sermons will use stereopticon views while attendees sit in silence and read verses as music plays.
Panama on October 5 welcomed Don Jose Domingo Obaldia as president in a record political demonstration. Thousands of Panamanians filled streets to cheer the new leader and reflect widespread popular support during the inauguration.
Sheriff Haven of Walworth county brought James Saulsbury to Sioux Falls where he pleaded guilty to stealing cash and checks from J. H. Croley at Java depot. Saulsbury fled after the theft, was tracked to Eureka, McPherson county, and the missing $200 and checks thrown away were recovered.
Sioux Falls, Oct. 3. Harrisburg, a town between Sioux Falls and Canton, suffered a serious blaze damaging the drug store run by Dr Ralph Steenson. He places the loss at 8,590 with 1,000 insurance. The building belonged to another party and the total loss on the structure is unknown.
White Lake South Carolina rider Mike Grit reports his horse Shady G. won a major Baden stake worth $90,000 after he had sold the animal a year ago to Austrian buyers for $5,000.
Chicago October 3. The final organization of the Conservation League of America is completed with John Mitchell and Gustav H. Schwab named vice presidents. Walter J. Fisher serves as active president. Members include the American Civic Association, AFL, Forestry, Railway, Farmers National Congress, and multiple river and improvement groups.
Denver attorney D C Beaman charged forest policy at the national irrigation congress. Beaman admitted representing Colorado Fuel and Iron but said the company had no forest stake while claiming policies hinder coal fields and boost the Colorado Fuel and Iron concerns. President Goudy invited Pinchot to join for debate, but Pinchot could not attend.
Director Leach announced in Washington that the mint would resume buying fine silver this week for subsidiary coinage. He expects to purchase about 125000 ounces weekly for an indefinite period.
Sioux Walls South Dakota October 1 Captain Seth Bullock reports Kermit Roosevelt declined to shoot buffalo during a hunt on the Cheyenne river and reservation lands. Bullock recalls rare sport, but Roosevelt refused to further deplete game, then they moved to Plum Creek for grouse shooting with a top bag of 48.
Pierre South Dakota October first. Attorney General Clarke voiced approval of placing the democratic petition ticket under the banner good government ticket. The ruling allows any set of names by petition under a party head.
In Murdo South Dakota October 1 rancher Brook Taylor encountered and killed what historians claim is the largest rattlesnake this season in Lyman county. The flattened skin measured 55 inches after removing head and a few inches of the body. The monster was dispatched with a lariat.
Three Yankton Sioux Indians Reuben Spotted Eagle William Spotted Eagle and William Highrock faced fines in a Lake Andes court after a dispute with Patrick Miles over a horse trade led to an attack. Miles defended himself with a pitchfork handle before the town marshal arrived and arrested all parties.
Illinois Central fast bound south derailed at Diver, 20 miles south of Springfield. Engine destroyed. engineer and fireman injured. Elizabeth McGuire, 77, killed by debris. Barrymore aboard but trapped. porter freed her through a window. attempted to reach St. Louis for an engagement. No passengers hurt.
In Bryant South Dakota George Quarts shot Mrs. Carl Schumacher after an argument over food. He then killed himself with a revolver. The event occurred in the home with Schumacher and her husband present, Quarts previously buying a gun and liquor on the same night. The tragedy shocked the local community as the first murder suicide in the area.
In Wyndall, Sept. 30, Mrs. Wim. Miller stood in icy cistern water up to her shoulders for two hours to rescue her baby son who fell in. She pulled the child from the water but could not call for help until her other children returned from school, saving both from a deadly icy death.
Dallas S D September 30. Officials warn that many maps claim correct plans of Tripp county allotments for Indians and townsites but no reservations have been made. The interior secretary and General Land Office delay townsite declarations until proper surveys and reservations are completed. A map will later show lands subject to occupation and Indian allotments along with government townsite sites.
