Flogging at the Cart’s Tail in Historic Saltash Scene

A historical note recalls flogging at the cart’s tail as late as 1836 in Saltash for robbery. The spectacle involved 76 armed men, a beadle, and a constable, with theatrical misuses like oiling the beadle’s hand and staged severity. A poet Cowper account mirrors the same brutal practice.

Larger scope of Improvements planned for Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul railroad

The Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul railroad plans expanded beyond a freight house and sidetracks to seven new stalls at the roundhouse, a larger tyro table, a new machine shop, and moving equipment to a new building. A new depot is anticipated next spring to relieve platform congestion witnessed during corn palace crowds and excursion trains. Through service to Rapid City may follow ballasting progress and track work. Mitchell appears set as the White River Valley division point for the Black Hills line.
