Wiltse The Photographer Parries Sugar Tariff Debate

Don’t Ask Republicans to Convert for Better Times
The Gazette argues voters were swayed by party “arguments” in 1892, notably Populists who fused with Democrats to gain a national administration and a hostile state regime. It warns that Populists assumed they could fix hard times, but Colorado and Kansas shows such moves harmed credit and stability.

Gazette Opinion on Economic Strains and Political Critique
A dated opinion argues that state government kept finances sound while blaming Populists for hard times. It belittles calls for more money as ineffective for drought-affected workers and cites business opposition to Populist policies. A separate brief reports a southbound train injuring a child near Tripp.
The 1873 act and silver coinage debate in newspaper view
A 1894 letter from A E Hitchcock of Mitchell addresses the 1873 act and modern claims of a secret conspiracy to force a gold standard. It recounts legislation from 1868 to 1874 on coinage, notes the shift to gold as standard, and mentions later public attention after the resumption act. It also covers a jail incident in South Dakota and provides wool market quotations from the American Wool and Cotton Reporter.

Chief Juggler Ward in Booked Campaign Juggling
Ex Public Examiner T F Blanchard analyzes Hon J A Ward’s remarks on the 1891 and 1893 legislatures, accusing Ward of misleading figures to defend the Demo Pop line. Blanchard argues the 1891 appropriation bill was a house and senate joint work, not a Republican-only measure, and cites tax and revenue details to challenge Ward’s critique of the Republican administration.
