The General Land Office will issue 4,664 homestead and pre-emption patents to claimants in Dakota. Distribution shows 899 in the Mitchell district, 2,020 in the Huron district, and 898 in the Yankton district.
A Pioneer Press report notes talk that Judges L K Church and Palmer will shift courts this week. Palmer has held a term in Spink county. Church is said to be in New York or Washington with strong talk he may become Dakota governor soon.
The W C U T adjourned with a tabled Had dock murder resolution and a non political substitute passing. General Nettleton spoke against the national union and the third party movement. A Washington special notes extensive patent decisions on delayed Northwest entries, with 4,664 approved across Dakota and Montana, many suspensions kept for review. Sioux Falls coverage also discusses Omaha’s Mitchell expansion plans and potential through routes to Valentine, Nebraska, as well as flax and wheat yields across 31 counties in 1885 and 1886.
A grand wedding last evening joined Miss Lilian G Steel and Ralph W Wheelock at the Fisher home with a luminous display of flowers lanterns and a floral hook and eye design above the parlor. The ceremony was conducted by Rev C B Austin with about thirty guests and a lavish reception followed featuring a long display of costly presents and a generous fruit and cake feast.
A devastating blaze at Olmstead and Slater’s livery near the depot in Mitchell consumed the barn and its contents about three o'clock this morning. Twenty one horses burned or died, and four government mules were lost. Insurance covered portions of losses for Olmstead Slater and others, while suspicions point to incendiary origins as investigators examine the scene. Carcasses of nineteen burned horses were buried by marshal order after authorities controlled the fire.
