Insurgents gain a majority of delegates, taking control of the South Dakota county convention. Break in the Black Hills shifts Pennington from stalwarts to the insurgent column, Gamble seen as sure to win.
Returns from county conventions across South Dakota show insurgent Republicans under Coe Crawford gaining momentum for the gubernatorial nomination and for the U S Senate seat held by Robert Gamble. A stalwart bloc led by Kittredge and Burke faces a shifting map as more counties pledge allegiance to the insurgents.
Washington May 2 The president sent to the senate a slate of nominations including W A Lyons for postmaster at Geddes South Dakota. Others listed include Consul General Louis H Wynne at Lisbon and Commissioner General of Immigration Frank P Sargent.
Bonesteel, S. D., May 28. Henry Carson a 36 year old unmarried homesteader living four miles southeast of Dallas died Sunday morning by shooting himself through the head. No cause is given for the act.
In Huron South Dakota on May 28 interest grows in inter collegiate oratorical and athletic events. Representatives from Yankton Mitchell Redfield and Huron colleges and Brookings State Agricultural College compete in Brookings and here on May 24 25. The contests lead to the interstate oratorical contest in Brookings and the state athletic meet. Attendance is expected to be unusually large.
Bonesteel South Dakota May 23 J R Kimball who faced Gregory county statutory charges was arrested at Douglas Wyoming and Sheriff Sprul left Sunday evening to return the prisoner back to the county jail
In Beresford South Dakota on May 21 a large barn owned by S M White was burned early this morning. The loss is about 1000 dollars with no insurance. Authorities suspect incendiary origins.
The fourteenth annual camp meeting of the South Dakota State Holiness association auxiliary to the national will be held July 13 to 22 in a grove on the James River near Rock Creek mouth east of Mitchell. Rev. J L Glasscock of Cincinnati will be evangelist and Prof A W Ginn with Mrs Katherine Ginn of Sioux City will lead music. Public invited with tents for rent and low rates for board and lodging. pasture for horses available.

Washington reports a new postal rule barring mail delivery to homes with vicious dogs at large. Carriers need not attempt delivery at such residences, and residents must call at the post office to collect their mail.
At Rosebud and Pine Ridge agencies Major Shelly and Colonel Brennan describe allotment effects. Most Rosebud Indians now take allotments, receiving a team, wagon, cattle, tools, and $50 cash. Upon allotment they gain U S citizenship and voting rights, with liquor sales posing concerns. Wealth from land grows while heirs receive monthly stipends. 5000 cattle to be distributed June 1 under the Gregory county treaty of 1901.
Rapid City mayor Dr. F N Emrick is named as a potential congressman candidate at the state convention. County Republicans among his endorsers claim he will secure solid Pennington support and even backing from outside.
Aberdeen May 22 Frank Mang a Bath young man tied a halter to his wrist to lead a colt to water. The colt bolted dragging Mang through two wire fences and injuring him severely. He was taken to an Aberdeen hospital for treatment with a guarded outlook.
The Woonsocket South Dakota artesian well began leaking, water rising outside the casing at about 150 gallons per minute. A special council meeting planned to plug the well 400 feet below the surface using a rubber or lead expansion plug, with sand gravel and cement above. The city has another well connected to the mains to maintain water service and fire protection.
At the International Academy of Dancing Masters annual conference in Paris delegates decided women should wear short skirts while dancing and that introductions are unnecessary at balls.

He called the alleged “little joker” amendment a misrepresentation and slur on the committee and lawyers, saying it would not have the effect claimed and that any such inference was unfounded.

Chicago cash grain and provisions rates show No. 2 spring wheat at 78.5 to 94.5 cents, No. 2 red 94 to 94 1/2, corn varying 44 to 47 1/4 cents, oats around 33 to 35 1/4 cents, rye 59 cents, barley 40 to 46 1/2 cents, with pork at 15.50 to 15.55 per barrel and lard at 3.85 to 3.75. Milk products and eggs noted with creamery butter around 13 1/4 to 19 1/2 cents, eggs steady at 16 1/2 to 18 1/2 cents, cheese 9 1/2 to 12 1/2 cents. Minneapolis prices list similar grain values for wheat, corn, oats, barley, rye, flax and macaroni varieties with no. 1 hard wheat at 83 1/4 cents and no. 3 yellow corn at 45 1/2 cents.
Sioux Falls May 19 United States officials hail a Supreme Court decision in the James Lincoln case. Lincoln pleaded habeas corpus after a Nebrask a federal court convicted him of unlawfully introducing liquor into a Winnebago Indian reservation. The ruling confirms federal jurisdiction over liquor violations on allotted lands, aligning them with regular reservations.
Watertown South Dakota May 19 residents will pay one third the cost of the Andrew Carnegie library building. The city council added funds seeking a larger gift but Carnegie declined further donations. The $165000 structure remains funded by local and other contributions. Dakota Central Telephone builds a fireproof office and wires underground with an automatic system.

In Yankton on May 19 John Wiseman son of Henston Wiseman recalls a 1860s tragedy when five Wiseman children were slain by Indians. Henston hunted Indians after the loss gaining fearsome reputation. John and sister Mrs. Chris Larsen remain with their father. Charles Conrad and Miss Lois French wed in the city and moved to land ventures near Pierre.
