South Dakota not an Alliance state, letter argues

In a May 16 1891 Frank Leslie's Illustrated letter from R W Wheelock of Mitchell South Dakota rebuts the claim that Dakota is an Alliance state. It outlines election results of 1889 and 1890, notes Republican strength, the intra party split with the Alliance, and asserts South Dakota's laws, banking and tax measures, and school reform show cautious, conservative progress not radical influence. It cites ballot reform, mortgage rules, and a strong credit stance, concluding the state remains a farmer’s stronghold with favorable conditions for enterprise.
